ok playing devils advocate. But your complaint is it looks boring. But how exactly does your 1997 Golf VR6 not look any less boring? And I'd have thought quite a similar idea in terms of power/weight/fwd/size.
It's called personal prefrance

Question/promotes discussion on a discussion forum. Personal curiosity. BTW I didn't say what I thought about it's looks, deliberately so. smile

V6 quad cam and 180 Gee Gees for 3/4 of a bag of sand? What's not to like? Take off some of the tell-tale badges, get a flat cap on, grey mustache and a cheeky hint of a zimmer frame on the back seat and blast the unsuspecting general public into this afternoon!

All for the price of a dodgy Bradley Wiggins look-alike bike!

Can't understand the badge snobs saying they would need paying to drive it -would any other small V6 FWD cars get the same treatment ? (Thinking Alfa GTV, Mazda 3, Golf VR6)
Re-badge as a Rover 45 and go have some serious sleeper fun ! biggrin

You didn't need to, your reputation precedes you. smile

Too intangible a subject that is only likely to lead to an argument rather than a discussion. As another poster said it's 'personal preference' and should be accepted as such.

Decent looking motor - at £750, can't really go wrong can you?
There are quite a lot of (nasty) stories about that KV6 engine. I don't think I'd risk it unless those concerns could be addressed. I really don't like these cars very much at all, although I have to say that I only drove one (lesser example) in Malaysia 9 years ago. However, this is Shed, and I guess the point is how much fun car (with a valid MOT) can we find every week for a grand or less. It's certainly not a fail, but I don't think I'd be tempted unless the price was even less.

Others here may know if the KV6 used in the ZS 180 had the gremlins sorted or not.

Personally I'm not taken with the looks, but then I feel that way about most cars of this class. That said, the big wing saloon version is quite striking in a similar way an Evo or Impreza STI is. Love or hate the looks I'm not sure that "boring" is an accurate description on any level. And would appear to be stemming from something other than the cars appearance.

And lastly it never seemed that quick - you really had to screw the bits off it to move.

But my god it sounded awesome when you did, even if that Golf TDI used to still get away from me up that hill :-))
If a Golf Tdi was pulling on you, then logic would suggest it was probably heavily mapped and tuned. And considering an MGZS180 puts up the same stats as a Clio 172 and many other hot hatches, then that same Golf would also have been pulling on them too.
I agree what it should have been doing - it just didn't seem to be doing it. I drove a few and they all seemed to be giving it lots of fire and brimstone but not a lot of heat if you kinda get me. Of course a fair degree of pilot error may have been involved :-)

VIS motors fail pretty often. That's the only common engine "issue" i'm aware of...

This would probably explain why some people didn't think they were that nippy- with these broken(and most 180's have at least one broken), they only put out around 120bhp.

I thought VIS used a solenoid not a motor? You learn something new every day.

Curious, but what issues have you heard of with the V6? The KV6 in the ZS isn't the same as the early 800's. I believe Rover developed it over the years. Besides early ones where all hand built, the latter ones weren't.

The biggest thing Rover did wrong with them was they set them up for comfort, so soft squidgy suspension. But the platform is good, although it's nearly all Honda. Rover had little actual input to the design of this model and merely restyled the exterior bodywork.

If I were to win the Euromillions I'd feel obliged to buy this and drive it straight into Jessi-j's tour bus, thus achieving 2 acts of kindness for the general public.
