With people's attitudes to cars these days it would have to be an older car. BMW wise an e39 may just fit into this. As most non-car types 'know' these days anything older than a decade is not only slow but about about to imminently expload at the side of the road. Badging a V10 M5 as a 520d would probably just reinforce the stupid opinions people have about run of the mill diesels these days!

I think my list would come down to:
Jaguar XJR - not too many visual cues as to its performance, apart from small badges, a mesh grille and big wheels/low profile tyres.
Rover 75 V8 - your grandads car, but with a few modifications will embarrass a fair few hot hatches.
Saab 9-5 HOT Aero - no visual difference to normal 9-5s, apart from a small Aero badge.
Volvo S80 T6 - pretty much same story as the Saab, but with a 2.8L I6 with twin turbos. Added bonus of looking like a police car.

Mazda6 MPS? .jpg?p=081103_02:14) Even with the badges left on almost no one knows what it is. Very understated, unless that is you park next to a standard Mazda6.

Although perhaps in a more sober colour for true Q car goodness. That said I think it looks awesome in the Polestar blue.

It's either got to be an Alfa 156 GTA SW or an E61 M5 in Monaco blue, de-badged and with the side grills swapped out for matt black.
The Alfa has more class, the BMW is faster.

What is a Q car/sleeper tho? What's the rules? I was thinking the v8 turbo Volvo but then T5's were quick.... Obv mine is quick but then so is an M3 which most normal people prob think mine is.

Obv mine is quick but then so is an M3 which most normal people prob think mine is. I think you've nailed it. Most people think yours is an M3. So it's no surprise that it's quick. A good Q car IMO is something that makes you say "what the f k was that" as it leaves you for dead. As I said earlier, I reckon this works with either cars you simply wouldn't expect to be quick and that there isn't a well know to Jo Public fast version. Most expensive cars to many are deemed quick regardless, so it rules out almost anything a bit flash or pricey, even of it looks dull. Such as a 5 Series BMW. Most of Jo Public would not expect them to be slow, so seeing a quick one isn't much of a surprise. Ok you can trick people with different badges, but 90% of the people who'll actually read the badge and understand it will probably also know just by looking I it should be quick or not. The other end of the spectrum is if you have a car that is almost an unknown. Even if it looks a little fast. Its not that people won't think it's quick. But they probably have no idea how quick, so it can catch them by complete surprise.

Dave Hedgehog said: my R32 was badged 2.0 TDi my S4 bitrubo was badged A4 1.8 and that was MTM modded 620nm Its not really a Q car though is it? I presume your R32 still has the bodykit, wide arches, twin exhausts and the multi spoke wheels. You've just put a TDI badge on it. Vauxhall did a V6 Cavalier with steel wheels and and base spec trim. That in my mind is a proper Q Car

My son had a 1989 318 tourer and modified it with an M3 unit plus brake upgrade/exhaust as well as the M3 box. The look on peoples faces when he hit them hard in the ego was priceless. Mind you it did take some work to do the conversion but it was well worth it - he also drifted it a lot at Buxton and Mallory. Sold it last week - it shall be missed! :-) Steve

Many years ago I saw one of those pale blue invalid cars leave a 3-litre Capri for dead. Turns out it had a 750cc Norton engine. Now THAT was a Q-car.
