I must say, there is some nice kit coming through that competes with the PanAm.

Looking at the interweb this morning, the new Audi S6 Avant looks rather lovely. It's got a V8, uses fancy tech to shut down half the engine so ( in theory ) it is not ruinously thirsty, and the price is pretty much the same as a loaded PanAm.

And it has box diamond stitched leather seats. I am sucker for diamond quilted and stitched leather. Love it. I'd buy one for that reason alone.

Were there a D5 Allrad it would have few competitors for "Most complete car in the world"...

(the Panan can now have a 100l tank, apparently)
That might be quite useful for very long journeys, although passengers would have to be fitted with catheters to make full use of the range, even with a much smaller tank.
There are many, many places to refresh passengers than don't sell fuel, mostly better than the ones that do...

Fuel stops can be thin on the ground in proper Grand Touring territory and tank range is often the greatest weakness of otherwise very fine GT cars.

also some people seam to have a pathological hatred of fuel stations, a break every 4-5 hours to refuel have a drink and drain the python is not a bad thing imo
I don't hate fuel stations, I just don't rate the catering...

...and, away from motorways, they can be few and far between.

Cross-country with my current car I'd be foolish to pass a fuel stop with less than ½ a tank in unknown territory, give me a big diesel with a big tank and I can safely wait for the 10l warning light.

Excellent discussion, trolls an all and i even have an appreciation for what is clearly a great all rounder, but in my eyes and from any angle, it's just so damn ugly!

Totally agree 535d.

Chris

How practical it the Panamera?

It is a HUGE car bigger than a Cayenne!
Length 4970mm
Width 1931mm 2114 Inc mirrors!

The New BMW 5 series
Length 4899mm
Width 1860mm

Those dimensions don’t give the full picture as the visibility and low seating position combine to make the Panamera a complete nightmare when parking in town even at the supermarket it feels the size of a truck you need to straddle two spaces.

The Panamera was designed with the American and emerging markets as its primary target it’s destined for the countryside or cities like Beijing and LA. Porsche had little choice to build it that way for the overseas markets it’s aimed at.

A great car for transcontinental trips but far too BIG for everyday use in Europe.
In London Paris or Rome its image over practicality.

I still don't get why it feels so small on the inside though it’s the opposite of the (Tardis).

Conclusion
535d = Sensible choice.
Panamera = Poser’s choice.
Are there really people who think that being seen in a Panamera is a good pose? Really??!!!!! It looks hideous on the page, it looks f*cking hideous in real life, it's fat, slow....

I admit beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but seriously, does anyone ever get up in the morning, pull back the curtains and see that abomination, and go 'morning beautiful'!!!!!

You are entitled to say that it is ugly (it isn't pretty to me either) but slow? Really? By what objective measure is this a slow car?

By that of what might be expected from a £70k+ Porsche, I suspect.

Tosh. It is possible to drive a car with moderate power in a manner that will make it seem crazy fast to most ordinary road users. In 1200 miles from London to Stuttgart and back, I wasn't overtaken once. How is that slow?

In 400 miles from Yorkshire to London and back, I wasn't overtaken once. Last week, in a TDV6 Landrover Discovery. Which is slow.

Don't we all love to have a Badge snob like that in
front of us, blocking the left lane on the Autobahn.

The Panamera Diesels IS too slow at 160-250 km/h stints,
which normaly should be its territory.

This is becoming a really amusing thread. Without facts
the Porker fiction reads like "Harris in wonderland".

with a driving deity behind the wheel and once the spinnaker is out and with a good tail wind it i am sure it can maintain a steady rate of knots

but its hardly very acclerative fast is it now

i would prefer my speedo to move round like this

Yes, everyone knows that just by having Chris Harris in the car - even if he's tied up in the boot - adds 50bhp to a car.

Stop hogging the outside lane then wink

Only kidding. I agree, it's not SLOW. suspect the 0-60 time makes it sound slower than is actually the case.

Is that true?

I'm off to hand around outside the Dry Cleaners with some rope to wait for him or Jason Plato to rock up.

Just be careful as you bundle Plato into the boot that he doesn't think you're acting a bit wierd. biggrin

I think this is nonsense. The PanAm diesel is plenty fast enough for the role of cross country GT.

If you seriously think a car that can cruise comfortably at 200 kmh is "blocking the left lane" then you have a problem. Or you are 15 years old, still look at the max MPH number on the speedo and get impressed if its a large number, or you are Jeremy Clarkson. It is a stupid thing to say. smile

So it was fast enough for the job?

I don't expect a diesel Panamera to be as fast an M5. When I first drove it last summer, I said it should have 535d performance, just like all of you are saying now. But living with it, I don't think twice about it being too slow. That's all I'm reporting. I didn't think I'd feel that way.

I've driven cars with 300,400,500,600hp over the same 1200 mile journey I did in this car, and I didn't complete it any faster in them.

So i think it's fast enough.

Clearly I'm not allowed to think that, but if that's the case, I suppose I'll just have to live with it.
