Can I ask Dan to summarise for us, if we were planning to buy any of Porsche's new offerings (in the sports car range).

What are the acronyms and their explanations, for us poor bewildered souls who don't work at Bletchley Park and are able to decipher them, that we should leave off any such vehicle to give us the purer feeling car ?

I guess we all realise the salesmen will be heavily persuading us that the vehicle "needs them" for your further resale value - a quick trawl through this website may prove the opposite for the true amount of loss for ticking around £15,000 of goodies - when the said equipped car is only marginally more expensive than the vanilla option in the true secondhand market ?

True VFM for your 2ND HND BYR......... ;-))

Hopefully if you were planning to buy one you would drive them and find out for yourself.

I drove a pretty basic 991S and the fully loaded Yellow 991S at silverstone and for me the yellow one handled/stopped and sounded better.

But that's just my opinion.

Hi Wills,

Since Dan is the author and a journalist, the essence and suggestion of his article was to leave off the multitude of electronic aids that Porsche (and many other manufacturers offer) I was asking him to summarise which of the somewhat bewildering array of acronyms in his opinion he would/should leave off the specification list on the car of his suggested choice.

I chose to add a little humour - somewhat at my expense, suggesting that I am not a code or cypher specialist able to understand the immense array of 'options' available on every new or sporting car on the market.

I do however own one of Porsche's older products, not a really early model devoid of mechanical or electronic aids, but a late model 993 C4S that does have (here come the acronyms) ABD, ABS, OBC, Dynamic 4WD, to paraphrase the owners handbook.

As an enthusiastic car owner I am very interested to know the thoughts of the fortunate journalists and owners of vehicles thoughts on them, it can help me and hopefully others formulate a viewpoint on what they would choose to have on their vehicle of choice in the future.

I for one do not spend my time going round the multitude of car dealerships sampling all manner of their products that I do not really intend to buy, from my viewpoint that is a form of joyriding. I do however prefer to go armed with guidance and knowledge based on personal reviews and information as mentioned from the above sources that Pistonheads as a public/business forum helps to provide and then test drive the appropriately equipped machine.

My current vehicles include a VW T5 Transporter 174bhp Van, Mk4 Golf R32, Porsche 993 C4S and 1971 Lotus Elan Sprint.

Best regards,

Oakman

Indeed Oakman, I hear you but for me nothing beats driving the car, I normally end up knowing more about a car than the salesman when I research a car I'm looking at buying. (not a difficult task in my experience)

BTW, I'm talking about driving cars when you are in the market not when you have 1/2 day free and feel like wasting the salesman's time, to answer your "joyriding" comment.

I think it's an enjoyable part of the buying process, reading the brochure, test driving the car and of course reading all the reviews I can get my hands on.

I like to get my head around all the acronyms and understand what they do and the benefits they bring for the cost they add, but there is no substitute for driving the car and feeling the difference they make as you see it not how the journalist sees it.

You can then compare your mental notes to his/her written words and make an informed decision.

Having driven a purer 911 vs a gizmo'd 991 my thoughts were yes they make the car better, 20k better? No so I would get the basic car as the cost vs benefit doesn't add up when you're on a budget (and most of us are)

Cheers

Simple, responsive, balanced cars with adequate, brisk performance, good feel/handling and a good ride for real roads are where it's at for the UK.

One of the directors at work owns a 911 convertible, bought new last year. He's not an 'enthusiast' and I suspect it was just something to buy when he'd made a bit of money -which is probably typical of a lot of buyers. It's presumably safer for a typical driver than a 70s 911.

Whenever I've asked him questions about it, he's known very little about the car. He thinks that it's too fast for him to make any use of the performance. He seems a bit underwhelmed with it on the whole and normally drives a diesel SUV.

Personally, I think the car looks too big and wide. I suspect that if I had the means to buy a 90-odd grand car, I'd prefer a cheaper Cayman/Boxster of some sort instead. Or more likely, I'd buy a few cars and bikes, including an 80s 911.
