you can go round and round with the high mileage car thing, but if you know the brand well it goes a long way to knowing if its a money pit or not. In my case I have an E46 330d with 246k on it. This is my 4th so knowing what to expect is a little easier. In the six months and 16k miles I've had it total costs have amounted to £3 for a length of Vac hose.

I wonder if we'll get an update on this RS4 in 2014 and be informed what the odometer displays now?

What's the absolute worst that can happen? You lose £7.5k, about the same as a year's worth of depreciation on a new A4. Even if those turbos do decide to go def-con 1 on the rest of the drivetrain, you can still break it for parts and you'll get enough back for a deposit on an A3. Laugh in the face of fear and tweak the nose terror I'd say!

One of the turbos went on mine due to a failed oil seal, it cost me under 2k to sort.
Some people spend nearly that much on a major service!

An elderly, leggy example of a notorious wallet eating car?

That car has been discussed on Audi SRS a fair bit, consensus being it isn't worth much more than £7k. When you look at the MOT history, it appears there may be a reasonable amount of suspension work looming. The RS4 badge placement is also a bit off, leading some to conclude it has been in a shunt at some point. I think for £7k with a new set of arms and bushes it could be a reasonable car, but I'd probably want to see history of replacement turbos, clutch, etc. Unfortunately, I think it is destined to be broken for parts.

I read the headline as £200K Audi RS4 (B5), and wasn't actually that surprised, given the current prices for "classic" performance cars

There are quite a number of B5 RS4s for sale at the moment, and judging by latest asking prices they seemed to have risen even since I bought mine less than a year ago. But, like many other "desirable" cars, are any actually selling?

Oh, and they do cost a bit to run these things! Ah well, just as well that I really like it

That's exactly what I thought. That car will be £1b now, even if it's been written off and at the bottom of the ocean for a year.

fking car prices rolleyes

These are very reasonable to run its the V8 RS4 which is the problem child.

Or C5 RS6 if you want eye opening and eye watering repair bills.

You say elderly they were only made on W and Y reg
I saw an elderly 1060's 275 GTB/4 not long ago and a Lotus Carlton and a Sierra Cosworth all much more elderly. If wager your not an RS Audi fan which is fine.

They're really not particularly reasonable to run. They eat suspension components, clutch replacements are a ten hour job, turbo replacements are engine out, there are loads of sensors which regularly fail, coil packs fail (though I did a TFSI coil pack upgrade to avoid this), cambelts are every four years, etc. Mine was about £5k in the 18 months I had it, though admittedly wasn't the best example out there. Having said that, I would have another if I also had room and money for something else that was RWD and V8.

Depends on your definition of "very reasonable". Mine is a 66k miler with FSH. In the 10 years the last owner had it the service and maintenance bills totaled £18k

In the last year I've spent £4.5k on it - suspension refresh, vacuum leak, rocker cover leak, Audi dealer major service, cambelt, water pump, thermostat, various odds & ends. It's currently awaiting a replacement rear-diff front extension and seal, which will probably be another £400-500

I do love it, there's not a squeak out of the interior, and have no intention of selling it anytime soon. Ownership costs sit somewhere inbetween my previous E46 CSL and E34 M5. But I'd not exactly call it "very reasonable" Welshie

I never said that, but it's not going to be cheap and reading the comments from people who have done some research on this particular car it looks like a risky proposition. Any large reasonably quick car is not going to be cheap to keep on the road, hence the high volume of really rough examples out there.

They only made 400 RHD versions - so I take that "high volumes of really rough examples" with an utter pinch of salt. In fact I'm not sure there are more than 10 for sale currently UK wide.

I was referring to RS Audi's in general. Jesus you're argumentative.
