Not in my experience. Winter tyres are great but I have never got stuck in summer tyres in a Skoob.
There are certain wintery conditions that will render any vehicle on summer tyres immobile irrespective of the drivetrain.Range Rover Sport stuck in snow
Now we all know the Rangie wouldn't even notice the snow if it were on the right tyres. Similarly, either of my 2WD cars would glide over that on winter rubber. I used to live in the sticks and can guarantee you that you wouldn't have made it up the street (14% gradient) in the ice on summer tyres.

A 4WD vehicle has a minimum of two driven wheels at any time. A 2WD vehicle, winter tyres or not, can be reduced to one, and that may well be the one that has just lost traction. As for needing 4WD for rain, I don't need it, but there is not driver on this forum who couldn't get more out of a 4WD sportcar in the wet than a 2WD one.
I'm not disagreeing that AWD isn't better in extreme conditions - merely stating that 99% of Porsche owners don't NEED the '4' model. If however you like to take the piste...Then have fun!
Yes very good ... 7 months to the 991 GT3 ... Moving on.

Really comes to something when the vitriol directed at a car is entirely related to the aesthetics of the badging.
Vitriol? Calm yourself. People, myself included, were just pointing out that it looks crap. That an opinion, and people are perfectly entitled to one. I don't think anyone has said "The 911 is crap because the badges look awful"If I was going to do that, I would complain about the electric steering.....

A massive Porsche fan for many years and own one, but I do feel that really 4 wheel drive could or should be an option box rather than a different model, bit like x pack on BMW, it's really not going to set the world on fire.
Again Porsche have moved a correctly spec car to over £100k in 2002 my 4s was about £60k that's quite a hike.
Not sure Porsche sales are going to grow as per the past..............well not 991 sales

997 Carrera S remains one of the favourites... Beautiful design, enough hp, track capable, gt capable, daily driveable and with a great looking interior (to me at least).
...along with
Ps. As someone living in a long winter country, Norway, 4WD is appreciated and a possible deal maker for many potential customers. Not for me though, 911 has to be RWD and a bit nervous

- 964 Turbo 3.6
- 997 GT3 RS 4.0
- 964 Carrera (yes, really. They are just so sweet looking with low profiles and a drop!)

Especially the price escalation, which seems to be ahead of its rival German uber coupes / saloons, from Audi, BMW & Mercedes. £100k+ for a none turbo / GT3 911 seems crazy money to me.
Must do wonders for 997 values though, as I dont see this new 911 as being worth the extra over the outgoing model.

I meant "more basic" than that. - The problem is that to get any enjoyment out of modern cars, or to use them as intended, is to risk your licence because speed and grip levels are now so high. These days, even a Corsa can do double the motorway speed limit and beat yesteryear's supercars around a track. One of the reasons why you often hear enthusiasts saying that they prefer to drive much older models is that the fun is more accessible (e.g you can usually accelerate hard through 3rd without going deep into disqualification territory).
So buy an older car, or a track day, or a go karting. Your points are loosely valid but dont detract from the potential enjoyment of the car in question, just means you need an old porker and a newer one. ;-) gibbon said:

Indeed...however there are other compromises involved in buying an older 911. - I wouldn't like to have to rely on one as an only car. What I'd like to see is a "back to basics" modern Porsche that can be used every day but is playful and fun at legal speeds. Like an upmarket GT86 with the power / traction ratio to kick-out the tail in corners. There aren't many cars like that any more.Clivey said:

I don't think Porsche are going to make 911 like that anymore. It just is'nt what Europe has in mind for us. We are going to see an electric hybrid 911 with KERS and suchlike, long before we see a paired down 911. And the GT3 is going to cost a fortune.Mind you, if you got a new Boxster or Cayman, resisted the options list, went for smaller wheels and tires, you may just get what you are describing.
Should have tried harder at school. Imagine the excitement of ordering a car like this and counting down the days to delivery. Then a late evening blast to Cornwall to get to know the beast.
Fair play to all that can afford a car like this.
Ultimate modern high speed sports car for me and the fact that you can use it in all weathers seals the deal for me.
