This will likely also be the last NA V8 M car you can buy with a proper (manual) box. This I find quite sad, I suspect all future M3s will be turbocharged autos.

I was close to changing my E39 M5 for the E90 M3, and apart from top end engine performance / noise, there was no other aspect I preferred. I didnt drive it long enough to get a good idea of mpg, but if you want economy dont get a v8.

Certainly not different or better enough to justify sinking an extra 20k into a car that has less space, torque and admitedly rust. New front wings, and a new boot lid will fix this, to tidy up the old girl.

Sorry but the M3 Coupe is much more glamorous.. and C63 ? Come on... one is for drag racing the other one is for proper drivings taking the weekend off to wales to enjoy their motor.
I take it you've never driven a C63 then?

Honestly get an E6x for similar cash and there really is no comparison between the two. Drive the M3 first and then jump into the E60/61 and hit the M button, unleash all 507 horses and just get a feel for the SMG.

I went to london and back with my mate in his e46 M3 a couple of weeks ago. 85+ all the way there and back on £80 of fuel. Computer was showing 30+mpg.

400 mile round trip.
...Apologies, it was my brother who posted about his E46 CSL, i just wanted the opportunity to Publically call him a pussy...

I am sure that you can achieve this as they are lighter than E90/92's...alot lighter in the case of a CSL

I had an E90 M3 for three years and have had my 997s cab for over seven years now and so ran the two side by side. I reckon you will find the M3 and 997 very similar in terms of running costs (assuming you are looking at a 997.1?). Straight line performance is very similar, if anything the M3 has the edge - but, stating the obvious, the 997 is better on the twisty stuff, but by not such a margin that you would notice much unless you are on a track. Both are great cars - maybe you should get both! Start with a 997 which is further down the depreciation curve and switch to an M3 in a year or so.
Yep, 997.1, been told to only consider the 3.8 S too. For my money that means 2005 latest compared to a 2009/10 M3. Though the mileage in most ads seems low so hardly used (of course if they're all track miles it's a different matter!). OPC cars with their 2 yr warranty are available which helps but it's still an oldish car, albeit of great quality.

It's a good call, the chance to own such an iconic car appeals and it's bottom of a much more expensive range not top of a cheaper one. I do worry about what an M3 wil be worth in 4 years when it may have entered the chav zone though buying on a dealer PCP does protect somewhat. And those jibes about being in my 40s and buying a Porsche will just need to be brushed aside!

Decisions, decisions...

The saloon does look a bit better. It's a bit more 'muscular', to quote the vernacular that Peugeot were so fond of using when they still made good cars.

Monkey smile,

I've the 2011 E92 DCT Competition Package and haven't not experienced the high driving position that some complained - I'm about average height. In fact, it's nice and low at the lowest seat position. I'm able to achieve 360miles to a tank on long motorway journeys and 270miles around town. Obviously, at the track, mpg goes way down, but what a delight it is. Perhaps the M3 improved quite a bit with the later models, as some mags have also noted.

Standard for standard the Coupe is MUCH better looking IMO; not only is the E90 rear end absolutely horrid with the pre LCI taillights, but also IMO the E92 front end doesn't suit it at all. The E90 is a more chiselled, aggressive shape whereas the E92 coupe is a flowing, sculptured shape. The elegant rounded front end of the E92 doesn't mesh with the rest of the E90 at all.

Oddly enough I think it looks great on the E91 on the few conversions I've seen though. The post LCI E90 M3 is also a very good looking car; still no match to the coupe though, especially in Imola red.

M5 E39 1825kg (source = Google)
M5 F10 1870kg (BWM press release)
Just to clarify, that is the EU weight which includes 75kg. A manual coupe weighs 1580kg, saloon 1605kg.

Also all weights are without extra's, they're for a base/poverty spec car.

Most will be nudging 1800+kg's

The M3 has a lot of kit as standard, to be fair. I have a DCT with Competition Pack which includes EDC, 19's, adaptive lights, telematics and I weighed my car at 1624kg at the local weighbridge. It had about 10 litres of fuel in the tank - so I think the quoted weight also includes a full tank of fuel.

Autocar tested a manual M3 coupe - weight was 1625 kg.

My local weighbridge has a tolerance of +/- 15kg IIRC

for a 4door saloon car and a 25k budget I would take a c63 over the M3 any day. Looks better, is faster, more comfortable, one of the best sounding cars ever, only downside would be fuel economy

The weight difference between the coupe and saloon is only 5kg if you don't specify a sunroof. Marketing hype for the coupe I'm afraid.
