Any owners on here? Am considering one for my next car in appx 9mths (Got a wedding to pay for first then the OH has given the all clear) Would be interested to know your thoughts and how its treated you. For clarification I only want to hear from owners or people who have actually driven one for a decent amount of time, not wannabes who think they are car journos and will spout the same tired s  t

I drove one in Norway, and I was I pressed. Ignore the ones that say 'golf in drag' etc. lovely power u der the right foot, and they do handle very nicely indeed! I thought the gearbox was nice and slick. Very nimble, despite what naysayers say.

Cheers they seem to be dropping in price a bit now too, hoping another 9 months of depreciation might see them in sensible territory

We have a TT-S & that has some decent get up & go, so the RS must be cloud nine in that regard, they have a nice interior & good seats & feel nimble, i certainly like the idea of a TT RS with that lovely 5 pot in it.

Pig Skill said: Nice looking but just a golf in drag That's just the thing though, it's not. The TT mk2 has a lot of alloy components in the chassis pan which improves weight distribution so it's not like the mk1which was just a Golf in a pretty frock.

The 5 pot appeals and I just overall like the look and sound of the thing albeit it not having driven one I know some people complain about the handling but I am unlikely to track it, I guess the main competitor would be the Cayman but Porsche interiors just leave me cold, I have been looking at Z4M Coupes as well but am drawn to the RS

It was absolutely lovely place to sit. Even the 225 was perky enough, to be honest. I always felt like a tit driving it with the roof down, though.

Funny you should mention the Z4Mcoupe as i have just got a Z4M roadster & the engine is sublime & it has a great old school feel to it, you have great taste in cars Keyser, i wanted the coupe but just thought i would hear the engine a little better with the roof off!!  Cheers mate they both seem to be great cars, I think the Z4M looks great I just wonder if the TT with the 4WD might be more useable more of the time, whichever I get will be a daily drive and I am sure the BMW would be technically the better driver but I do want to be able to relax at times and just cruise

Try a BMW equivalent and still tell me it's a good steer. I cant get over the gaudy styling either, very Essex.
A 135i or a Cayman is far more stylish...

I've never driven one, but I can tell you they are silly fast with a bit of tinkering. There are a couple around here that regularly frustrate me, they have definately grown on me and hardly anyone I know now associates them with the TTs of old, or golfs.

Friend of mine has one, or used to .... Jonny Cocker, (currently racing for JWM motorsport! and doing well!), Think he works or does work for Revo as well so his had simply monstorous levels of power. If its good enough for a guy like that...then it must be a good steer!
Just go for it. 5 pot even beats out 6 in sound terms IMO.

It was so obvious that a thread like this would attract those who think a TT is still just a golf. The mk2 TT is a very different beast to the mk5 Golf which was out at the same time, the diagram gives you some idea of the construction of the TT, you can see that the mk2 is largely aluminium so the whole chassis weighs around 200kg, or 100kg lighter than it would have done with steel!!  Also consider that the TT-RS is made by Quattro GmbH so it travels no where near a golf production line. I only have experience of a TTS which my dad has owned for just over a year. In that time it has had zero faults and has proved very rewarding to drive once you get used to the 4x4 system. Don't get me wrong the handling is still a tad too FWD biased until the haldex wakes up which is a shame really as a more RWD bias like a traditional Quattro system would be ideal. If you aren't adverse to modifying a car then a HPA Haldex controller sounds like it could be a winner, as it allows far more power to the rear

The Mk2 TT, even in 2.0 tfsi form, has a great engine and is quite a lot of fun for that reason alone. There's a lot of grip even in the front-drive models so you can get about very quickly. Fun handling it is not, though. The steering is too clueless, the suspension too uninterested in working with the road, and feedback is lacking throughout. It's still a very good all-round car though. If you add the 2.5 turbo from the TTRS then I'm sure you get even more accelerative fun and a great engine note on top of all the rest. What I imagine you don't get is any better handling (presumably it will be worse, as usual when a bigger, heavier engine is fitted).
It's a personal choice whether that will do it for you. I always find that pure acceleration, and a good engine sound, get boring after a few days. You get used to what a car accelerates and sounds like very quickly. Whereas it takes a while to get used to inquisitive handling, and it always keeps you interested and learning more and more.

All golfs tend to be set up for safe understeer - that explains the TT's wooly handling.
The Golf and the TT share the same engines too don't they?

I've driven a fair few of them and they are a decent everyday car, properly quick, make a great noise and are easy to live with.
They are not a sports car by any stretch of the imagination.
I'm sorry, but i'd buy a Cayman S over a TT RS every time.

TT RS is a real weapon.
The engine was voted Evo engine of the year 2010, personally I love a blown 5 cylinder as well. Handling neutral and perhaps not that exciting but in the real world you'll be going too fast to worry!

The Golf and the TT share the same engines too don't they? Plenty of 2.5 5cylinder golfs around....... in NA form in America..... but the TT-RS only has a block in the same dimensions, not even made of the same materials or with the same internals so yes you are spot on
