There's been a series on youtube/the net - "will it blend " (they throw loads of stuff in a blender).
There's been a series of "will it drift". (They try to drift bus's, taxis, etc)
I think there should also be a series of "will Chris not drift it" ? ...

Enjoyed the vid anyway, despite the inevitable drift shots.

Let's not forget that 380 bhp back then was as much as a top of the line Ferrari Testarossa.
Indeed. It seems these days a saloon (or anything in fact) need 400+bhp minimum to be considered sporting/fast etc. Most AMG are pushing 600bhp these days non?

I'd never heard of that model before, although as I've always lusted after the Lotus Carlton if I had a choice of any AMG... I'd have the AMG Hammer please cloud9

Ace.

Love the comment on the accelerator pedal. The old man had a 300D of the same era. It was more of a heavy switch!

Good to see Mr Cropley in the background as well. Keeping you in line I assume, from any monkey business.

Keep up the good work.

Would like to get my old C240 V6 doing this. 170Bhp in 1.4 tons doesn't really allow for drifting like this hehe

Ahh now I feel a little sad. I had the 320CE for about 5 years and did about 50k. Had to sell it as I just couldn't justify putting loads of money to keep the rust at bay and putting 10k plus a year. But what a great car even as a standard factory one!

Saw the hammer a couple years ago at Goodwood it is such an icon of the 80's I love it!

500E was the other amazing car but was never made into a coupe.

Thanks for vid could have been a bit longer....

And yes that throttle! How was it reversing? it was such a joke in the 320CE on or off and loads of spinning wheels.

Am I the only one on here that thinks that a lot of posters would love to have Chris's babies?

Personally, I find the videos very similar...

'look at me driving whilst talking' and 'wow that cameraman was well placed to see me going sideways'

I'm sure the guy is an accomplished motoring journalist, but, well...just but.

Very nice indeed. As somebody else pointed out earlier the six cylinder W124s could sound very nice too. My father's 300E was excellent. I can only imagine how excellent this thing would be. I actually don't mind all the buttons on the dashboard. Much easier to figure out than fuggin iDrive etc.!

Stunning car. I've seen a few back in the day. Always black. In fact the word 'black' doesn't say enough about how it looked. This stunning all-black beast always looked like it was superimposed on the real-world background. Like it had been green screened in. Blacker and meaner that the surrounding light would enable. Amazing.
I always had mixed feelings about it though. Such a majestic and powerful car with an crap-tastic old fashioned automatic. Of course if it could be recreated today, it begs for a PDK/DSG LMNO...P. If only...

Does anybody know what the cost was when new? Very cool car, as soon as you hear the name you know it must be good! smile
it was similar cost to getting Brabus conversion done today. An expensive car plus another car wink Back in the day widebody versions of the SEC took on some scary incarnations with tuners such as testarossa side vents and wings

Great video, would have been interested more in the AMG factory and museum, a few more clips of the previous cars built by AMG. I really fancy a C36/43 AMG after watching that.
Trouble is if you tried that in a c43 you would have to sit whith a box of neutrals for an hour or so before it would drive again ;0)

Chris, have you been looking at your August 89 Fast Lane again? smile
Just found that very copy in the loft a few weeks back! I still want one. Probably had more money when I was 17 than I do now, so I'm not likely to!

If you love AMG then I can recommend a visit to Mercedes-Benz World, in Weybridge Surrey. There are a lot of older cars on display, a small race track, cafe, new AMG showroom etc. You can even pay to drive the latest models on the track! Luckily I live only a mile away so I'll be making a few more trips.
