Let's not forget that 380 bhp back then was as much as a top of the line Ferrari Testarossa.
Indeed. It seems these days a saloon (or anything in fact) need 400+bhp minimum to be considered sporting/fast etc. Most AMG are pushing 600bhp these days non?

I'd never heard of that model before, although as I've always lusted after the Lotus Carlton if I had a choice of any AMG... I'd have the AMG Hammer please cloud9

Hmm, some are but not all. The V12 models run 612hp and a (limited!) 737lb ft, but the most powerful V8 model is the SLS GT, which is 591hp through the old 6.2l N/A V8, instead of the new 5.5l twin turbo.

The C63's are 451hp before performance packages and black series editions and whatnot, and the other "63's" are around the 510-530hp mark before performance packages (normally about an 8% power hike).

I wish I needed to look any of that up... why can't I remember Economics related information so well... frown

i remember seeing a roadtest between a 500E Hammer and Countach in the late 80's.
The Hammer went from 100kmh to 200 kmh in 10 seconds, 4 faster than the lambo..

Epic motor
Wish i could find the mag...

If you want the next best thing to a Hammer...forget the E500...nice car but not as entertaining as one of the Twin Turbo conversions undertaken by Hughes of Beaconsfield (MB Dealer) who converted W124's.

Less than 30 official conversions done and the last ones were on E320's that kicked out 360bhp in a car that looks like an old taxi....very entertaining cars to drive, so go out and find one before the rest of the world catches on and prices start rising.
Didn't turbo technics do this as well ? Have a vague relocation of a 320 4 matic estate monster being created. Maybe wishful thinking confused

I have had a soft spot for 80's AMG's since......Well, the 80's
This is my old bone that i transformed into a Hammer AMG alike!
Welded on an extra inch on all 4 arches & exstended the sills/bumper skirts.
Have just bought the old girl back (needs a good tidy up)Would love to stick a Big Merc V8 in it!!
You need to find someone with a written off 500E wink

Are the Hammers really into megabuck money now? A Brabus E60/600E? would definitely be a more achievable prospect...

Yep, 24 done by Merc Beaconsfield (Hughes) in saloon, coupe and estate. No 4Matic that I'm aware of (the transmission intrudes on the driver footwell in RHD cars)

Given the close rivalry with BMW M, it's amusing to note that both companies are celebrating birthdays this year, M its 40th, AMG its 45th.

You don't say. Does anyone proof read stuff before it gets posted these days?

I Love the AMG Hammer. I think a fair few of these cars reside in Japan now, and can sometimes be seen for sale here:

http://www.garagecurrent-global.com/amg/medium-cla...

(I know the car pictured in the link is not a V8 Hammer, but a wide body 3.4 CE is still pretty cool)

I so wished i still had my copy of Fast Lane from the late 80's that had a feature on the AMG Hammer and the E32 7-series Alpina B10 3.5 (also a great car).

Noteds some comments regards the SL73 - Am i right in saying that the engine in that model is the one used in some iterations of Pagani Zonda?

A Blue-Black, pre-facelift R129 AMG SL60 would be nice also.....

The 4-matic was dropped from the UK range at the time of the '93/'94 face lift, it continued on the continent but carried over the 3litre engine. Post face lift this was the only petrol engine option I think, as the 2.6 had been dropped (was a 4-matic option).
