Anyhow, for the money I'd rather opt for a C280 sport for sub £1k, one in the classifieds now with some Sport/AMG goodies on it

This makes the 190e look like a worse Fail then the non-turbo rover we had a few weeks back banghead

Here's a 250,000 miles, £150 Mercedes 190E 1.8 Manual being autotested by one of my friends. From memory it was fitted with some cut down EVO springs that were lying around, escort mk2 rear shockers, an out-of-date racing seat, the interior was stripped and the diff welded. I's still going fine!

Not a fan of this SOTW and it doesnt really even stand in the shadow of the Hammer on Harris' vid

The C280 is better, and could be broken for more than that price, even the slabs look in pretty good nick!

I'm a fan of Shed, but this is not the strongest edition of that particular sequel I'm afraid. If it's got a pukka AMG bodykit (doubtful?) it'll be worth something to someone, but then they would still have to find some OE manhole cover alloys at the very least to make it presentable - those wheels (and to a lesser extent, the steering wheel) really push the car way past the borders of not-even-quite-that-good taste.

And then you'd still be left with a rather striking dichotomy between what this car is (a demure, automatic saloon car with beige interior) and what someone (young or otherwise deluded) obviously felt it should be.

Don't shoot me, my first car was an automatic Saab 900 saloon which I also tried to geve a more youthful aura with a Turbo spoiler and black plastic centre caps... hehe

Love the C280, that is such a nice looking car and looks in really good condition for £850... Can't see that being unsold by the end of the day!

Pleeze PH Stop doing this! All I've done is spend days looking at 190 Cosworths on the net, nearly considering a 6'000km 2.5 for €25'000....

See, now that is a proper SOTW.

190E chav 'AMG' with 120bhp and 4 speed auto = SOTW FAIL.

Is this a joke, people getting bleary-eyed over a an orverpriced/expensive mediocrecar with some 'barried' finishing touches and the plebs come out to say what a great car it is..

I know it is a debating topic, but this is where speed matters, a saw a nice c240 estate with all the timmings for 740 on ebay.. They are much classier.

Them 190 were supposed one of the best build quality mercedes, might be slow but if your spending sub £1,000 wont cost a fortune in fuel. looks ok to me

That C280 looks just like a C36 to me without those bodykit wheel arch trims that have rust creeping out from underneath them.

I prefer 190Es, but as others have said that C280 seriously trumps that particular 190E.

A very nice old motor a 190E 2.0 Auto, far more positives that negatives going for it. Sadly the body kit and nasty alloys only take from this car. Ideally, a 2.6 auto is the one buy.

A regular 190e with an autobox, excellent autobahn cruising, just dont tart it up to look like something it is not fit to stand in the shadow of.
Agreed, but this looks like it would be great daily driver.

Not my kind of shed really. This thing just doesn't have enough waft factor to mix it with the bargain barges, or enough zip to keep up with a hot hatch. Not a "FAIL" but more of 5 out 10 must try harder....

Dont mind the 190, testament to their build quality how many you still see around, this one however, though it looks tidy is a bit flash, in 1988 that look still looked good, in the late nineties it looked a bit drug dealer and later on they were to be seen piloted by older blokes trying to look like they had made it.

Expect it is pretty slow but that doesnt matter but these look better bog basic and not trying too hard, preferably in some flat colour with steels or the original disks, when Mercs were the ultimate expression of solid germanic utility, well, at the cheaper end of the range they were, higher up they got a bit Bobby Ewing/80's german porn director.

I love that era of German cars, the solidity, the quality, the lack of prentension but sadly people didnt like that last one and added their own prentention in the form of a tacky body kit and some big wheels, "Lorinser" were the prime exponents of this I seem to remember, even now people seem to want some AMG topping on their C220.

Ill take mine in in Nato green with steels, but perhaps with a cheeky engine upgrade.

My dad had one of these about 8 years ago, it was also a 2.0l Auto. It felt much quicker than the figures would lead you to believe - especially in Sport mode, which made it drink alot more fuel apparently! Probably because my dad would just drive it harder than it actually being any quicker! It was a really clean and solid car though and built like a tank.

There was a trader in Ulster that had a white 2.6 190E manual with rear wing and sunroof up for £1295ish for ages. 2.6 ones have added cool as John Peel had at least one.

Wow, that second one won't hang around long if it doesn't have any hidden gremlins not listed in the Ad. Not my cup of tea, but what a lot of engineering for the money! I like it.
