I recognise what you are saying, but what most people (in particular, on this forum), do not seem to understand is that is simply my opinion. I think it looks pathetically weedy and especially feminine- that's my opinion and I'v every right to it. Why people bother quoting me to try and tell me my opinion is "wrong" is beyond me.

Then you've got the guy I've never had the displeasure of meeting calling me "fat". Grow up PH, really.

As those with a 95 percentile+ arm span will contest too. Why can't you just accept I don't like MX-5s?

Had you originally said

"I don't fit in an MX5 as I have freakishly long arms nor do I like its looks"

Perhaps you'd not be so ridiculed - but you didn't.

I have no idea what percentile my height, weight nor arm length are. What are your other hobbies ?

Well, guess what I bought this morning:

Recognise it?

It's got problems and sold for quite a bit less than in the classifieds. It's my very first project car! Not really sure what that project will eventually be, but for now making it legal will be a start (God knows how it got it's MOT...).

The standard gearstick heat problem but, more worrying, a rather stiff gearchange.

It's leaking oil from cam position sensor, but the cam cover has to come off anyway as it needs a cambelt.

It apparently needs new rear ball joints, but I can't say I noticed.

Can't see anything out the rear window it's so cloudy!

Standard knackered windows.

Rather smelly, so I suspect blocked roof drains.

And quite a lot of cosmetic work needed.

And as for the legality:

- no rear fog light.

- illegal front number plate

- the seatbelts don't retract as they're caught up in the roll bar, but I've sort of fixed that tonight - they now retract slowly.

- middle brake light doesn't come on with the brakes but does come on with the rear lights...!

But it's solid underneath and there's a specialist not too far away, so I took a gamble...

Are you sure there isn't a switch somewhere as many convert the middle brake light into a fog light.

That would make sense - I'll need to dig deeper...

I tested a 1.6 a few years back and it just didn't grab me. But this 1.8 is much stronger. Still feeling it out, but I did (accidentally) wind up the LSD this afternoon and that brought a smile!

For the small amount it cost, I'm not too bothered if it turns out to be a dog, but looking good so far!

(Although the comically over-reading speedo will take some getting used to...)

Probably a cheap kmh / mph converter - remove it and fit a replacement speedo face cost around £8 and take 20 mins to fit.

yes

No offence meant to the vendor, but it was nice of Chris to judge MX5s based upon this less than perfect example.

My offer of a drive in mine still stands.

Well,

I thought I would make the most of the last day of temporary insurance and take it for a run on roads I know well...

I'm not sure, but I don't seem to be connecting with it.

It bounces over the road rather than hooks into it. Only once, through a series of bends I do know *really* well did I manage to get a nice, smooth passing of weight from side to side.

So I am guessing that the Tein coil-overs are well past their best.

And there's definitely something wrong with the gearbox. It never crunches, but you *really* have to jam the stick into every gear. I'm hoping that's not normal.

And it's a bag of nails when you first start it up. HLA rattle in abundance (although oddly, not there yesterday on the test drive...) and a really high (1.5k) idle. Once the engine's warmed up, though, it's really sweet. Not fast. Very noisy.

So, off the to the local specialist with a "make it good" direction...! Fixing the gearbox and a geometry set up will be top of the list. I can live with the rest for the time being.

(Also, the suggestion about the rear brake being the fog light was right - there was a switch under the steering column. The last owner must have been driving it with on all the time - hence the middle brake light coming on with the normal rear lights...)

your gear booties are knackered - the top one being knackered lets the trans tunnel heat through, and the bottom one being knackered lets the turret oil all fall out making the gear shift stiffer.

Are the Teins adjustable ?

Changing the gear oil for fully synth really helps the change although yours sounds like it might need a good clean / the bushes under the gear lever changing.

A flush and a change to a decent semi / fully syth should cure the HLAs too.

Well, today's challenge is getting it insured. So far, no one will touch it with that roll bar in place.

Anyone want the bar? I wouldn't declare it if it was just cosmetic, but this thing is bolted to the floor pan as well as the parcel shelf. It's almost structural...

Aside: who is good for insuring modified MX5s? I was hoping to do a few things to this one, but this isn't a great start. I'm working through a broker who is going out to the various 'enthusiast / classic' policy underwriters. It's strange, as my premiums are currently around the £200 mark (so I'm no great risk), but the moment the bar is mentioned I'm told they all decline.

Although Footman James are meant to be the company of choice more and more people (esp OC) are becoming disillusioned with them

REIS were fine with my cage (bolted to the floor). And they were fine with the turbo and welded diff too. And the carbon bodywork.

With all the Track day boys proper roll bars are in demand £170 - £300 depending on the type / make
