I'm curious about that also.. did you use an Alpha N remap? Is that an aftermarket box?

Is this the full CSL install ....ECU etc or just intake?
It's not the original CSL intake but a quality replica made in Germany (although I bought it from the UK) without the flap (thus open at all times instead of over 4K RPM which I like even better). The loudness is proportional to the accelerator input. In other words, you can cruise quietly at any gear but hell breaks loose when you floor it. It's running on Alpha-N very smoothly without any issues whatsoever. After an expert remap, the engine is producing close to 380 PS which surprised me as I wasn't expecting that much increase. Not many people can program the Siemens Z4M ECU in Europe though as it is different from the Bosch one in the M3. Overall, not a cheap mod but worth it for those who want to get the best out of the engine. I've looked at the original CSL option which was even more expensive and complicated (e.g. the flap doesn't work without the CSL ECU) without any apparent gains and the BMW Motorsport option (used in the VLN and 24h race cars) which was nice but way more expensive.

I can provide more pics and dyno chart if there is interest.

All the best.

Thank you.. i am. So is it the CA tech intake?

I'm in the US and wondering where i'd get my ecu tuned after installing such a thing (maybe VAC, but think they specialize in M3 S54's). Any info about the program would be great.

Of all the non-essential mods possible (aside from the full Motorsports kit.. hehe) this has been the most interesting..

Massive giant +1 with sugar and strawberries on top

Especially since Simota seem to be taking forever to release their CF intake

Ok. I'm in the Netherlands. The airbox was 2,670 Eur in 2010 (inc. VAT). My supplier in would like you to contact him directly if you're interested. You can PM me for his details. You have to add the installation cost which would be 1,000-1,500 Eur. The Alpha-N tuning cost me 900 Euros including the Dyno time (it has to be done individually for the car on the dyno). This last step is needed to get the additional performance from it. Otherwise, it runs fine without tuning. So, one should budget 5,000 Euros (+/- 10%) for it.

Hope this info helps. As requested some pic more pics below:

First the dyno (before and after):

Then, a few pics from other angles:

Initially, I did not use a CSL style front airduct to avoid potential issues with rain (since there is no flap). Now that it produces decent power, I'll leave it as it is.

And the mini-beast that houses it:

Thx for all of this info. Intake noise is so much better than what comes out the back:smile)

I only have the clip of the dyno session. You can hear it better towards the end!

I'm heading out to the Alps with a group of friends soon. May return with more clips, and some tunnel ones too. smile)

The z4 coupe is not in competition with an m3 is it?

You know for all it's foibles, I'll really miss my M coupe when it goes.

It just has so much character.

It's going to go in the next couple of months I guess but usually when I'm thinking like this I know exactly what will replace it but I think I'm only down to about 6 or 7 alternatives!

Oh my god I want that intake. That is ridiculous - nearly 380PS!

I'll put it on my wishlist to Santa biggrin

Much prefer the original one. Not as an open top. Great engine, looks good, decent boot.
Modern alternative would be a 135i.

Had to double check the date want April 1st for a second there. Z4M not dynamically superior to an m3? If this article wasn't credited to Chris Harris I'd cry foul it was written by someone who hasn't driven one or both of these cars. Having owned both they are like chalk and cheese. The m3 is like a poorly sprung barge to the pointy Z4M which always feels faster and more nimble.

Serious drivers always look to brake and suspension upgrades to make the m3 feel viable. No need in the Z4M.....

that's an interesting point actually, i found my M3 to be sweeter in the handling department that the Z4M coupe, though it was the CSL version ( i had it running conti road tyres & a fast road geo mind you so pretty comparable)

as many have said it just felt easier on the limit (less prone to snap into over steer & much easier to catch), but the Z, for all it's quirks still has that something about it.

maybe there is some truth to the whole challenge of a trickier car?

incidently i loved my CSL but it didn't last long with me as i hated the gearbox, one of the main reasons i love the ZM is the fact you get that engine & diff mated to a manual box.

it also helps no end that it just looks so right too!

The CSL is a different beast to the regular M3. The z4 comes as standard with the improved brakes from the csl interestingly.

I can only go by what has been written in Evo Novnember 2007 " Greatest M-Car ever test? "

After 2 days of testing with 12 M cars Catchpole et al stated:

"Z4 M Coupe (2006-Present)"
Like the original M Coupe, it's not a cutting-edge drivers' car, getting a bit ragged over difficult surfaces...........Will it make the cut? Probably not. 'The old girl (Z3M Coupe) gets my vote in the battle of the Coupes,' says Green. 'You have to dig that bit deeper to find the new car's spirit' "

The final selection: E92 M3, E46 M3 CSL, E39 M5, M1, E30 M3 Sport Evo.

"it's the E30 that beats them all. It wins because it does more with less and destroys the idea that if power is good, more power must be better"

I suspect that is what Harris is getting at???
