Style is subjective and practicalities are for girls not men!

Also the Z3M is a far tricker customer to drive fast than a Z4M as its very old tech.
Old tech and trickier to drive fast is a good thing to many men and women. Any monkey can drive a modern DSC equipped car and act like a hero.

You mean CH? Well he isn't any monkey though- I have seen his videos with the DSC off and is a hero in that e39 M5 of his. Makes it look so simple..

Ooh the temptation. This thread has been a big help in my research in replacing my current fleet with a Z4. Judging by what I've read, I'll be going for the 3.0 Coupe over the Z4M and swapping the boots for something a little less rigid; as the general gist is that the 3.0 is 80% of the Z4M at a much better price. Man maths is seriously at play here though, as I drive 100 miles a day and this will be my only car (Replacing a 120D and an MX5 Mk2.5). All the cash I save on tax/servicing/tyres/etc both cars will simply go into the fuel bill.

FWIW I love the looks of the Coupe and I must admit (somewhat embarrasingly) that it is a big factor in the purchasing decision. Saying that, I'm probably the only person in these 17 pages of thread that actually really likes the look of the standard Z3 roadster, so my opinion means nothing biggrin

You'll regret not getting the ///M
Have driven both in the alps, it is better and will hold its value better, as they get older

I only got out of mine to free up cash for a wedding (madness I know!)

Argh don't do this to me! I had all but decided!

I think that while I would be mad to throw my toys out of the pram about MPG here, considering the kind of car we're talking about. However, I think it's something like 44MPG Extra Urban vs 32MPG or so in the 3.0 vs ///M specs. I think with my annual mileage I'll be single-handedly keeping BP in business. After their fine I heard about today, I think they're going to need it...

It's not 80% of the M... It's 90%, I'd say.

Having owned both, I'd suggest the 3.0si is FAR better value-for-money than the M; however the M is the better car.

When you start to stack up the costs of the M, that is when you need to question if it's worth it.

- Worse MPG (quoted as 8mpg worse)
- £470 tax
- 50% increase on insurance (in my case)
- 50%+ increase on servicing
- 100% increase in BMW Warranty costs
- ?% increase in parts costs (M tax, again)

All of this DOES add up, regardless of what people will say otherwise. I look fondly back on both cars, for different reasons. The M, it must be said, is an absolute ANIMAL... At the current prices (look what I sold mine for), they are a steal.

Not sure if serious, but I can assure you they are poles apart. If you cant afford the upkeep of the Z4M then I'm sure a 3.0i is a suitable alternative if you can afford the increased cost of running then dig deep and your will be rewarded.

How about you get the 3.0 and pop a wee supercharger on it...ZM performance with 3.0 costs, unless you drive with your foot welded to the floor of course.

Another thumbs up from me towards buying a M, other than the annoying cost in tax, the engine is worth it on its own & they are great fun to drive if you are prepared to get stuck in,they are very rewarding.

I don't use mine as a daily & it's doing 24mpg I would think it could get pricey if you did a few miles in it everyday but you would be smiling for most of them though!

Not sure if read rest of post. They are not poles apart. Have you even driven a 3.0si?

I wasn't talking about affording the upkeep either, I was talking about VFM - totally different things.

This is ne seems to really divide opinion. I have driven them back-to-back and i would say the si is barely 50%. they are night and day in my opinion.

The pervading memory of these is definitely understeer when pushed hard. Also the jittery bouncy (and confidence sapping) ride over anything other than a perfectly laid road surface. Oh also, the massively over-invasive traction control.

Other than that, they are superb machines and have a real x-factor that is hard to explain. With some choice suspension mods they can be made great.
You can't possible site that level off critisism, at the car, and then round it off by saying what a wonderful machine it is. If it understeers when pushed, has confidence sapping handling, and the driver aids cut in far too early, then, sorry, but that ain't a top notch performance car, in anyones book.

Under steer???

Seriously? There must have been something wrong with you set up or driver??

Mine had super fast turn in and a mobile rear end, much more stable on oversteer than a friend E46 M3

No but I have had 2 cars with the same engine and to compare the 3.0 lump in the si to the 3.2 gem in the M is quite simply laughable. Don't get me started on the exhaust note or the suspension or the steering or the way that the M handles on track. Its like comparing a chipped 335d to a V8 M3 wink

There are very few cars I would buy again. The Z4M Coupe is one.
