I do agree that he should've had it serviced with Mazda, no idea why he didn't.

If Mazda quoted £3k why doesn't he go to his cheaper place?
I think he is thinking to let anyone else do it would mean he still has to pay Mazda for what they have done already then pay to get it towed to another garage which is all just added cost.

Did he buy it from the dealer he has taken it to?

It is likely to be a franchise and if not they probably have no interest in fixing a car for nothing on a car they didn't supply and haven't maintained.

If you want to try the warranty route, as suggested earlier, Mazda UK may be a better option.

OP has said he has had it 22 months, so no.

I dare say he is up the creek without a paddle. If it'd had full Mazda history I'm sure things would be different.

So he's saying to Mazda "even though you are Mazda dealers I didn't want to give you any of my money to service it, but now its broken I'd like you to put your hand in your pocket and help me out with a cheap/free repair".

Best of luck...
No he's saying " My engine has gave up after just over 3yrs and 50k miles, why should i pay 3k to get it repaired? "

I take it if it was you then you would be happy to pay the 3k?
I'd have had it serviced by Mazda.

But if I hadn't, no I wouldn't be happy, I'd be gutted, but I wouldn't expect Mazda to be paying for it or accusing the dealer of "stinging" me for expecting to be paid for a repair to my car!

It gets worse! So not only have Mazda not had a penny from him in servicing, they haven't had a penny from him when he bought it either!

Remind me again why he thinks that should be paying for this for him..?

I think your brother needs to get realistic. Pay them for the work they've done, retrieve the car and take it elsewhere, or pay them to fix it. Those are his two options.

Hi guys im typing this on behalf of my brother who isn't a ph'er. Basically he's currently having a nightmare with his Mazda 6 2.2d 2009 with 50k on the clock. The car is just out of warranty by a few months and the timing chain has slipped causing major engine damage according to the Mazda dealership where it is now. Basically they want £3000 to sort it, we both think this is outrageous and although it's out of warranty it's unfair to expect him to pay this kind of money when the car has only done 50k and is just 3 yrs old.
I should also add that he has kept the service history completely up to date but with a well known high street garage not Mazda, will this matter? At first he did say he wasn't going to pay for it but they just said they won't give him the car back if he does this.

Any help would be appreciated smile
So just to recap - the car is out of warranty but you expect the dealer to repair any faults FoC?

Interesting.

It's not just a 'fault' though is it mate? It's a major engine fail, not quite the same as a dodgy starter motor.

Another thread from another forum concerning the same, that recall must have cost them a fortune!

Do any of the services Mazda have not done involve checking the chain tension ? if they do, has the indi. done it ? if not, i would be looking to the indi. as they would not have carried out the services correctly, resulting in early failure

It's an engine fail due to neglect on your brothers part. Had he serviced the car at Mazda, they would have fixed any recalls or sorted any updates from Mazda free of charge at the time of servicing.

By skimping and taking the car Else where, all recalls and updates have been missed and the timing chain has failed.

Mazda have done nothing wrong. Not happy with the price? Go elsewhere. Expecting them to fix a neglected car, out of warrenty, free of charge? Get stuffed!
