I'll clear that one up for you. It's the double standards.

I get the Panamera Diesel.

On Friday night, probably about 2300hrs I'll be arriving at the Channel Tunnel on my way to Geneva to go to a wedding on Saturday afternoon.

Midday Sunday I'll be leaving Geneva and shooting over to see some friends for the night in Bergerac before leaving on Monday morning to get to the office by Monday afternoon for a meeting.

I'll be doing it in the 2010 730d but this is what these cars are all about. 1600 miles in 2 and a half days in effortless comfort.

I could take the Integrale or the 911 but for what I need the car for the 730d is the perfect tool.

I get the Panamera Diesel.

but what are we saying here, all positive reviews about cars need to be a group tested otherwise they are meaningless and cannot be posted? Not sure that's right.....
Well I can't claim a collective we, but what I was suggesting was that folk might accept Harris' obvious Porsche bias if there was slightly more substance to a review than simply watch me rag this car they've given me for a few months round a closed circuit.

Maybe a panamera derv is the only car I'll ever need, but I fail to see how someone with a reputation for bias towards that particular marque is going to prove that without showing me how it beats all the other options.

But then that might not create quite as much web traffic eh? wink

  • by the way, in reply to the point you raised that I quoted above, it is interesting that when car magazines road rest a car in isolation they often give cars a "provisional" endorsement in lew of a group test on British roads.

when?

he demonstrated that it was extremely slow in a straight line, but for him it was a perfect blend of driver involvement, quality, frugality etc but then again he loves the passat diesel which is one of the worst cars i have ever driven, even worse than a base polo with randomly servo'd electric steering.

handling does seam very impressive for a 2 tonne car

but if i wanted an ugly 2 tonne 70 grand car i would get a GTR and not have to worry about slowness, horses for courses etc

still an impressive and enjoyable vid

yes, he loves every car i drives. maybe he was/is a salesman?

I think the looks are 'distinctive' - but the inside looks great, but two things put me off.

Pricing is steep - prior to launch I thought it would be around Cayenne territory for equivalent engine. The M massive say that the new M5 is too expensive, but it would be very similar in price to the diesel Panamera.

The lack of a five seat option. It just seems odd in a car of this size and limits flexibility for what is designed as a family car.

Oh and out of interest anyone know why the cheaper A6 gets a better 3.0 tdi bi-turbo engine and this doesn't as it makes no real sense to me with the newer more expensive car getting the older engine than can be traced back to the dawn of mankind...

Apologies.

I made the mistake of thinking you wanted to engage on a sensible level. You're actually a troll who makes actionable statements.

It'll be interesting to see if Porsche stick the V8 diesel in the Panamera now that it's in the Cayenne.

Then the comments of 'it's not fast enough' will be put to bed once and for all.

Oh and reference to the V6, a 15 second quarter 10 years ago put it up there with some pretty exotic machinery don't forget.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean by that (actionable statements?).

I honestly thought I was discussing the topic on a sensible level & although I get the general gist of what a troll or trolling is supposed to be on Internet forums, on pistonheads I usually see it as something a poster calls someone else when they can't find a reasoned or rational retort to another ones point of view.

I kind of expected better....

I just don't understand why didn't they use the bi-turbo 3.0 V6 someone explain doesn't make sense to me at all :s

It's just gone in the Audi product, it'll need to be Porsche-ised first.

It cant be that hard to Porsch-ise it though just a bit of mapping if anything...
Also when they were developing that engine they could have done it for the Porsche as well instead of modifying the current unit they had to suit I just feel with the extra 60-70bhp could have just made this car near enough the perfect all rounder, as when they decide to fit the 4.2tdi it will probably make it a tad too thirsty whereas the Bi-TDI would have been the perfect blend imo.

I mentioned this early on in the thread and CH (I think) said it was to do with the bonnet line being too low on the porsche.

Chris I'd be very interested to see how the Panny (this iPad thinks it should be a Pansy for some reason) stacks up against a 640d. Particularly as the lease deals on the BMW are ludicrously cheap right now. Surely that is a more natural competitor than the 5 series.

"We will ban" was where I stopped reading.
Get over it, the PH community does in fact see the comments for what they are worth and holds the poster of such dross in contempt. We dont need a Guardian Angel to further "prove" the point by banning people for getting it wrong. (unless the poster is "at it" all of the time)
Kneejerk reactions like these are just as tacky as the pathetic comments made.
Not a knee jerk reaction, but one we've arrived at gradually during the year. We're getting really bored of comments such as this, and don't want them or the people who make them on the site. We're all for a good argument but the sort of statement we're talking about has no place here.

I'm saying that publicly so that people can consider themselves warned.

Hmm okay bit st if that is the case as the engine in this is very similar to that off an Audi A6 of 7/8 years ago...

Either way I still think the Alpina B5 Bi-Turbo Diesel is a far better and cheaper car as mentioned earlier anyway just makes this pointless in comparison in my view unless you must have the Porsche badge smile

15 second quarter pops it pretty much level with my 740i from 2001, guessing a later, similarly engined 5er would be about the same. Getting 30+ mpg out of mine is technically possible but can't really be done. Like reading through a CH video thread without getting wound up by the inane comments of some.

So there you go; today you can get 10yo V8 luxo barge performance and comfort with similar economy with 10yo compact exec diesel economy. Fairly impressive stuff

Spot on.
