You're missing something. Have a flame on me. It's a Grand Tourer. Range counts for a lot, unless you're so spectacularly wealthy that you can arrange refuelling on the move (from a passing Hercules, perhaps)?
Yes, you'll probably stop in a small village when you're halfway through your fuel tank in a petrol car, but the quality of fuel you might get may not make it desirable. Super Unleaded isn't universally available.

If you can afford the car; surely you can afford the gas no? I'm a near american (i.e. french canadian), so we pay less for gas, but still, a Panamera?!?! Oil should be a measly consideration:
6.50pounds per gallon
Lets say say 25mpg per gallon
Assume 400miles weekly (a health 20800 miles yearly)
5408 pounds yearly (+/- 450 monthly)
Even at 40 mpg:
3380 pounds yearly. (+/- 280 monthly)
Panamera Cost: 63k+
5% interest, 60 month schedule
1188.89 monthly, (+/- 14250 yearly)
Not including maintenance, insurance, parking etc.
Surely if you can afford the car, fuel should be the last of your concerns! (or I am missing something, let the flames begin!)
Haha, I was about to write the same kind of post. According to me fuel consumption in cars like this, m5s, AMGs (wow, we lowered it 15% bla bla bla), M550d etc is just a "poster" number. A number to try to show of the technical knowlege of the company. It will surely sell cars, but economy wise its just does almost nothing since depreciation is such a big factor (the depriciation is especially brutal on your island). But maybe for the third or fourth owner when the value has stabilied 6.50pounds per gallon

Don't take this as snarky but I'd be genuinely interested to hear what Porsches Chris doesn't like. Maybe a little 924? 996 C4?
Now that is a good question! And it was phrased in a non-offensive way - which kind of makes a change.I like and respect the 991, but don't want to own one: whereas I had both 997 (which in fairness I sold quickly for a 996 GT2) and 996. The more I drive the new 7-speed manual, the less I like it. It's a cracking car, but the £90-£100k asking is way too much.
My stance on the Cayenne is simple: if I was ever in the market for such a vehicle, I would prefer it to be a Porsche, because I like the way they engineer cars. As it is, I have no need for or interest in that type of car.
New Boxster is the best car Porsche makes. Really enjoyable. Proper manual 'box makes 991's doctored PDK seem nasty.
Panamera I wanted to hate, but in that role of big-mile cruiser that can hitch its skirt a few inches when the mood dictates, it's brilliant. Not having 5 seats is a big mistake in my book - but doesn't seem to be affecting sales. People who compare it to 5-series et-al need to ride in one for extended periods. It's an S-Class/Bentley rival for NVH and cabin quality.
Thought the last Cayman R was over-rated: preferred the Spyder. Or a used GT3.
Not a 924 fan, but a 944 fan. Likewise, anything G-Series and pre-G50 has to be stunning to pique my interest.
Desert island 928 is '86 S2 (one they call S2.5)
The best all-round sports machine for daily use of the past decade is.....not a Porsche. It's an E46 M3
Chris do you have the wall of the house papered with old copies of Christophrus/GT Purely Porsche giving acronyms to things around the house rolling a vario cam chain thru your fingers like worry beads?
It is a horrible looking car, even with Porki glasses on. A Corvette nose- S-Class middle - 911 rear end.
But like a Catholic Priest giving advice about contraception this is OK as long as you are staying faithful to the Porsche brand. The factory drip feeding snippets of what you really want and asking you to abstain from what you like for just a little longer. Oh since the 989 you have been hoping to enjoy the back doors every once in a while like everyone else. Your problem is that this Panamera Diesel is 100kgs lighter than the V8. But I feel that the guilt of the 912/914/Cayman is upon you. You want to enjoy the ligher more nimble version from Porsche. But you know that there is a heavier more powerful version you shouldn't like.
I am sorry for the annalogies of sexual tension. But you know that there are various incarnations that you and others would like. But they will never induldge this

Big diesel engines do have a fall-off in economy once you start to really use them, certainly, but hustling an A8 4.2 TDI I managed to drop the consumption to low-20's on a trip. That was really pushing it though, lots of max acceleration through Alpine passes, with significant gradient to add to the comsumption woes.
Similar driving in an A6 3.0 petrol returned 13mpg, and it wasn't anywhere as quick a car; the A8 was astonishingly fast in the mid-range
Sure, the actual fuel consumption doesn't really matter for a £70k car in the context of the overall costs (particularly depreciation), but the amount of time you spend at filling stations sure does, and if what you're after in a big saloon is sheer thrust and a big range, I can't see any occasion when I'd choose petrol. It's not as though anyone other than a journo would be driving an S-Class listening for the sonorous note of a V12 as they wound on a little more opposite lock, is it?

Chris, Good review but one aside that caught my interest was the Dynolicious app, take it that's do you generally find it quite accurate? Presumably that's the iPhone version, I would need the Android one which from what I read is a slightly watered down version.
It is very accurate. Just make sure you have a proper phone holder otherwise the results can be a bit iffy.Johnboy Mac said:
After hearing that vid, the summary goes something like this:
I'm not friends with Ferrari but as sure as hell I'm not going to fall out with Porsche. The only car anybody needs is a Porsche diesel (because it will do 150+ with an old Audi engine).
Or:
Better a small brown envelope from Porsche than none at all from Ferrari.
Maybe, the above is harsh & incorrect but...

It's easy to throw mud from behind a keyboard and computer screen... But when you accuse someone of corruption in their livelihood... that is something else altogether.
Anyway, I could be wrong so please put me to rights, it doesn't seem to me that you have actually driven one of these. I have and did think long and hard about buying one. Just to let you know, I also own a full factory D6 Brabus CLS as a semi regular smoker (for when a long journey needs to be undertaken) as well as a number of performance cars. The Panamera is as close as you are going to get to a fresh out of the box diesel do-everything salon car. Compared to the Brabus it is probably a little more refined, and for everyday handling and driveability, better in everyway. The Brabus isn't short on poke or performance.
I think the difficuly is that people will never get over the fact that diesel can never be the same a petrol. The sound WILL be differnt, the red line WILL never be as high, its just a different fuel with different properties. SCIENCE. Once one gets to grip with this then attitude changes.
The Panamera is a marvel of modern car engineering, with or without air suspension it does getting from A to B with such finesse that a car of either fuel choice, but with those dimensions and weight, really ought not to. Let's not forget the brilliant interior design and quality of the whole thing and that does go a long way to justify the rather hefty price tag.
The looks are a bit of Sarah Jessica Parker (face like a foot, but if you have a foot fetish...), but other than that I couldn't really think of any reason not to buy it (except price of course).
For me... I don't have a foot fetish
