Confession time. My wife drives a Skoda Yeti diesel, in most circumstances I'll choose to hop into this, if it's available & leave the V8's and V10 in the garage. I like the way the Yeti delivers it's power.

No need for a flame suit old boy, I feel I'd be doing the same thing if I were in your position.

I think we need to take these tests with a grain of salt. Its one car, on a few roads or maybe one track, at one time- all in Mr. Harris opinion in this short time and place.

To be honest that sort of testing can be interesting as we see this Porsche on these roads at this time. I believe Mr. Harris is talking the truth of what he experiences right here and now.

With this said when I drove the car it was more like how Evo drove it, over many long road, with rain and wind and changing speeds, and often I'd jump into my friends M5 to compare.

What we have here is the idea of the short form road test vs the long form. I'd go with the long form road test- like evo give us, any day of the week. Its just a more precise, more considered and comparative way to do car testing full stop. But I will continue to watch his videos for the enjoyment factor and to learn something he might say that is unique about a given car- not often I find, but the passion is great even though his attitude is sort of "I'll do it my way and listen to no one else" "I never need to learn anything new about testing a car".

This, will of course, be replaced with many deaths and maladies associated with EMF's?
There are no comparable stats but my guess it won't even come close. Fossil fueled transport in cities make absolute no sense.

The tide isn't exactly turning yet, but there are ripples.

I think the biggest competitor to the Panamera diesel is now the Cayenne V8 diesel, now they are gonna sell like hot cakes.

For a diesel 4 door daily driver? biggrin

Actually, has anyone noticed how much TVR you can get for 5-7k these days? It's remarkable and I don't think they're all borked either...

For an enjoyable daily driver yes. And stop telling people i'm relying on nobody buying them and crashing them so i can still have my pick!

I will state as an opener that I cannot stand the 'chummy' attitude to Chris Harris on here- people asking questions as though he is a long lost mate.
In balance though......if the opportunity arose for a beer, well, count me in- he has been doing what he does for quite some time, has driven most of the aspirationsl/enthusiasts cars over the last years.
The question is- why does the article get derided by so many for not being a comparison between their idea of a rival? Damned for being biased, damned for not including the aforementioned rivals. If the guy is so st at what he does- which is clearly not the case- why do so many people care? You don't trust his reporting, yet fall over yourselves to have rivals included. Are you all on the cusp of a purchaseif your particular questions/comparisons were to be answered?

Solid journalism, good article about a superb car.

Nothing more- or less. I fully understand that many will not understand Porsche- it's range, heritage, engineering and myriad other elements, but some of the comments on here from 'enthusiasts' is pretty poor, and begs the question why so many more are not in journalism.

Look if you want to read an in depth and detailed comparison of the Panameria in relation to its competitors read the evo article ... http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/cargrouptests/2563...

if you want a quick impression of the car with a few thoughts on its relationship to a few other cars, look at Mr. Harris's vid- its thats simple.

Monkey did cover this in one of his earlier replies.

The low bonnet line of the Panamera means that the V8 and new bi-turbo don't fit. The V8 i could understand, but the bi-turbo is basically a reworked version of the same engine, so i'm sure it could be repackaged.

The black and heads are probably the same, they just need to reposition the turbos and plumbing. A Panamera Diesel S with 330bhp would be awesome.
Yeah does seem strange as it cant be that different in size you would think just another turbo to add into the mix...

They fit the 4.8 Twin Turbo V8 in just fine for example smile

I honestly think 240/250 is not quite enough and that extra 80 or so bhp would make all the difference to this car in terms of performance. Would probably bring late 5s to 60 and around 165mph still doing around 40mpg which for me sounds far more appealing smile

What the hell is wrong with PH at the moment? There are thousands of different shapes, sizes, types of car out there. Everytone wants somthing different in their cars, and it would be a bloody boring place if everyone bought the same thing.

Jesus. If you dont like the Panamera, move on!!!
Quite. A lot seem to think they should keep making their point until 2.5 million agree with their view.

Bet they're fun to chat to in person, eh?

Can we get rid of this ridiculous myth that everybody who buys a diesel must only be doing so to get better mpg!?

Quite ridiculous.

They do so because sometimes, in certain vehicles, in certain circumstances, they drive (thanks to the torque) quite a bit better than petrol cars do. On top of that variable, you also get something called 'personal choice' thrown into the mix.

Alot of the time, mpg has fk all to do with it.
If you can name a single car where the diesel engine hasn't been introduced on the basis that it can provide better emissions numbers over the EU cycle, I shall eat a hat.

-edit-

I say "a hat" because I don't own one; I will have to go and buy a hat.

I'm not on about emmisions, I'm on about mpg.

And I'm not on about the reasons given for introducing a car, I'm on about the reasons for somebody wanting to buy one.

But in answer to your hat-eating pub quiz forfeit question, how about the recently announced V8 Cayenne diesel S. That kicks out higher emmisions than the existing diesel does.

Humble pie flavoured hats now available to order online. wink

I still don't understand why this car is rating a lowly 5.7 rating...I mean ok, the looks are subjective, but i think its a superb car...contrary to what people say, those with the money to buy such cars often DO care about MPG, so a car that can cover 40 MPG on a cruise, yet still has similar outright performance to the new Focus ST is a good thing. Im sure that porsche must be underquoting the power ratings on that car...basically its as fast as the 276 BHP Jaguar XF-R Diesel S, which is 50-100 KG lighter....when two out and out porsche nuts like Harris and Meaden say they really rate the thing, you've gotta take notice! Question is however, why Porsche dont stick the new Audi Bi Turbo engine in it. That would certainly answer any criticism that the car is too slow for the cash. Actually it isnt, people pay £60 grand for the slower Merc S Class 350CDI
