I would just like to add that after speaking to BMW they will not be updating any BMW’s built before March 2007. This seems strange to me and BMW would not explain why they are using this as the cut of date.
I asked about this too and the answer was my vehicle build date dec 2006 is not affected. No reason why, just not affected. My guess is March 2007 is possibly the start of the efficent dynamics bmw engines which might possibly just have used a different OBD software for any of a million reasons.

Is it ironic that this was on the national news yesterday. They showed footage of how to do it and CCTV of it actually happening.
Ironic, no. Stupid, definitely. It's like the Panorama programme a while ago, that highlighted some of the "issues" with self-service supermarket checkouts. They just seem to like producing detailed guides on how to successfully steal things these days.
So why doesn't this affect cars after 2011, did they more the OBD or resolve the blackspot areas within the alarm system, as surely these are what result in the thefts? I'm guessing that a simple software update will soon be programmes into the OBD readers for future thefts?
This was a main reason why I didn't buy a 1M earlier in the year, and their unwillingness to admit this was a problem another!

1. OBD port is live
2. Alarm has a blackspot that means it won't trigger if the window is smashed ins a certain place and area (where the OBD port is!).
1+2 = 3. Thief with these...
... breaks in and drives car away within minutes.
So, given that part of the problem is the shoddy alarm, I am curious to know how this so called 'update' cures the sensor problem, not just the live OBD port?!?
Do you drive a BMW having that kit to hand!?2. Alarm has a blackspot that means it won't trigger if the window is smashed ins a certain place and area (where the OBD port is!).

Hi,
I called BMW Customer Service earlier today about my E60 550i, which has exactly the type of key shown in the articles and on watchdog. I was told that the software version on my vehicle is not vulnerable to the methods currently being used by the thieves.
Although mine is a 55 plate I've always assumed it was a 2006 model. It was supplied to the original owner in late December 2005 and there are quite few differences between it and a slightly older 2005 E60 that belongs to my brother - including the key (his has the traditional type key).
I'm going to check with the dealer too, as I'm not 100% convinced mine is safe. Plus if there are some free updates available, it would be a shame not to try and get them.
Cheers.

Is it only RHD models which have the problem?
i.e. does the alarm on LHD cars cover the OBD port?
Same sensors on both LHD and RHD (see my post a few back for part numbers), same blackspots. There are reports on BMW forums across europe of cars going walkies in the same manner.i.e. does the alarm on LHD cars cover the OBD port?

Really the OBD port could do with being in a better place. Either in the door jamb so you can only access it with the door open, or behind the ashtray, or in the glovebox!
