I can see BMW's point about laws making BMW ensure that the cars do not need a franchised dealer.

Maybe its an area that the EU could look into relaxing (with some cost ceiling perhaps!) as I for one would prefer something like vehicle security and key coding to ONLY be handled by the factory or at worst specialists like OEM manufacturers. I had a look last night and its ridiculously easy to get OBD reset tools, key re-/encoders and odometer adjustment tools for not a lot of money.

Of course the flip side of dealer only is if the factory folds (Saab, Rover for example).

However. Denial is not a viable excuse and they have turned a blind eye to this for too long me-thinks.

So why is it BMWs are easier to steal? Just silly placement of the OBD port?

And I always thought the ignition had to be on to gain a connection? Anyone with more knowledge wanna weigh in?
Lost the search function? or living under a rock lately...plenty of places to find the original topic biggrin

...suitably humbled - Didn't notice the lack of posts and implied lack of forum use (unless he's a semi lurker). tbh didn't think it read as a "Billy big balls/internet hotshot riposte" to be fair, and there are multiple threads on the issue already, thought it might avoid another lengthy one on the same thing if I pointed him at a thread where it's been done to death...but there you go. getmecoat

Dear Pistonheads Towers,

Despite specificually being asked to and a 90 page thread having been running on this forum for seveal months there has be absolutely no coverage of this issue as a news item until now. The day BMW announce a fix you gibve it coverage.

Frankly I find it incredibly disappointing that the first day you give it coverage is the day there is positive news from BMW. You could have done your many members a huge service by publicising this much earlier, some of them may have been able to avoid having their cars stolen.

The only conclusion to draw is that the relationship with BMW is worth more than the reltionship with the thousands of members of Pistonheads nono

Cheib, did you see this:

It's just as well they did it then otherwise Anne Robinson and her better looking colleague that can't lift a wheel clamp may have got there first.

Out of every adversity comes an opportunity?

BMW Roundel branded wheel clamps.

Colour matched to your BMW for an extra £500?

After a few conversations with BMW regarding this issue I have voted with my feet. BMW can go f%^k themselves.

BMW customer 'service' is just ringing out, or you're put onto a constant hold loop, just rang my local dealer to be told no ETA for a fix for any 3 series, and BMW will contact me when it's ready. Hmm I feel suspiciously fobbed off...

Really? If you look on the other threads it seemed quite a few people would rather have their BMWs taken that way than have their dwellings broken into to get the keys.

"But a quick internet trawl reveals it's not just BMWs that are vulnerable. Devices similar to that used on BMWs are also available for Opel, Renault, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Toyota and Petrol-engined Porsche Cayennes."

I didn't....that report was only in response to press coverage though. They could have led the issue months before.........and didn't.

I fail to understand parts of the article but then again I'm tired.

How or why on Earth would a bank/financial institution try this trick to gain a car which they have helped someone finance. They would 1) not go to the bother and 2) would not have a leg to stand on at all in a court of law surely? It would go down as TWOC surely....

Also the bit about blocking must read the opposite way that they want to block Garages from having access to the OBD port and only BMW dealers having access to this system?

Really good to see them sort out a serious issue with their cars? This should be a recall, the fact that BMW aren't treating it this way shows they aren't taking the problem seriously.

Bad show BMW.
