While my dad had the BX GTi he got a Peugeot 405 SRi as a company car.
It was that or a Cavalier SRI 130. The Peugeot won because the Citroen engine was so good, and the press raved about the Peugeot's handling. They didn't rave about the Cavalier.

The Peugeot wasn't as nice. Wind up rear windows, tweed seats. But it was quite nice. The Citroen was brilliant though.

Performance Car had exactly that line-up of cars in a group test in 88. ( plus an MG Montego )

Good to read the ownership stories.

I had one, in this case with leather and (u/s) air conditioning. I dragged it out of a neighbours garage where it had been mouldering for years - I'd spent all my money on building a house and needed a shed. The main fault was with the MAF - the throttle jammed open if you used more than 70% of the pedal's travel. ISTR it was 2x what I'd paid for the car for a new MAF. So I got very used to driving around this little foible, otherwise it did family duties very well.

The day I sold it, I demonstrated it to some chap using 68% of the throttle travel. He seemed very pleased and I never did hear again from him....

Refreshing to see a BX not only as SOTW, but also gaining (almost) universal praise! Don't think I've seen a car this popular on SOTW, but then 2012 does seem to have been a bit of a love-in for old French tin. Looks like a tidy example too. LOLing at some of the comments about these being superior to the 16v....they're only superior if you don't want to rev the engine, want to cruise and want a smoother ride. In every other respect, a 16v is better IMO. Certainly in terms of PH. But there's always mixed opinions on these cars, and more myths than facts. I won't rabbit on about BXs in every detail, as I've done that already on here (and immediately wondered who the hell cared!)

This is my 16v, which I've had since June 2004. Well spotted by someone on an earlier page - it is the car used in the Forgotten Hot Hatches feature a while back:

This is it with my other 16v I'm currently doing up:

The grey one is actually very tidy - tidier than my red one. It's got factory-fitted air-con, which I'm going to raid and fit to my red car, rather than selling the red and keeping the grey (currently named G-SEG) because A) I've never driven a better valver than my red one and B) I'm attached to it! I need to do some welding on it though, get some pipework and get an MOT on it. Then decide what to do with it. Sell it probably, having read the love on this thread!

Having read the second pargraph of the Summary seems you're right Kitchski about the 16V vs 8V.

I'm not sure people wanting a BX will have that choice and suspect they'll have to settle for the best one available for their funds rather than a specific model due to the limited numbers now available.

Didn't the LTT CAR Magazine white BX GTi 16V trash it's gearbox somewhere near Northern Italy? I remember the photos of it up in a ramp with the OS wheel of it off.
Some of the guys did have a substantial problem with the 16V in northern Italy, you're right, but then the car had just come off the Mille Miglia - I was chauffeuring the snapper Tim Wren and we had to drive like loons to keep ahead of a field of mad classics cars so that he could be in a good position when they came through. At one point the police had just closed one of the mountain passes prior to Stirling Moss and the hordes thundering through, and we had it all to ourselves. No wonder that poor old car broke later on. It was, however, fantastic fun, a real under-praised hero.
That was a persistent wheel balance problem although there was a gearbox whine which eventually culminated in the 'box being replaced. They did manage to get the car back to the UK for that job though

I really deteste the rear wheel spats. These are pointless as any aerodynamics achieved would only cost you more on brakes as they do not get cooled as quick and run warmer.
Havers!

Citroën's powered brakes were well ahead of the game and would be far less prone to overheating than the drums used by contemporary Fords and the like.

Probably my favourite shed of the week EVER.

I had the original GT on a C plate, and later on a Turbo diesel in silver with all the chunky trim on a G.

These cars were so throwable, despite the body roll, that you could practically drift through anything flat out making you feel like a WRC driver..

It goes someway in saying that my favourite drive is still the run from my old house in central Leicester to the family home in Abersoch, N Wales. This was nearly exactly 200 miles door to door, 85% A and B road through Leics, Staffs, then into Wales and over the top on various routes (Knockin or A5 with various shortcuts). I've since owned a fair selection of cars, including a track prepped Integra, and an E36 M3 Evo, all of which I didn't tend to hang about in, but the quickest I ever made that run in is still 2hrs 45mins in the Turbo Diesel BX...

Past the old Knockin shop smile - nice route and the 497 used to be fun when it was quiet

If anyone's reading this and is feeling the love, I know of a black ph2 16v up for £650 with no MOT needing a bit of work:

Give me a shout if you're interested and I'll pass the details on to the owner. It's not going on the bay (to my knowledge). The car is in Lincs (again to my knowledge!)

Cheers

No connection with seller, but looks a very nice example if anyone fancies it:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1992-CITROEN-BX-19-GTI-G...

Read the description carefully as there's a few things to note and I'd want the wheel covers including in the sale unless swapping to alloys.

Very late example too smile

All good points. Always have a specialist inspection done by a recommended expert. I use nigel Sandell who is also used by others on this 'site and James may.
