I remember a few years before the 'recession' when car manufacturers insisted it was only commercially viable to produce a limited range of models, small, medium, large, in configurations that were most popular, small hatch, large saloon, medium with both.

How come then now it seems there are so many niche models, crossovers, cars which server a purpose noone knew of, or no purpose at all?

There must be more MINI haters on the PHs than any other forum in the world.
Yes and I have no idea why, do you ? It's not like anyone HAS to buy one. I recently asked if it was due to frustration or jealousy. I got insulted in return for that as "jealousy" is the default answer here apparently, so it deffo can't be that.

Try listening maybe? Have you considered that others really may know better?

The #1 failure of the BMW Mini is an immediate and total loss of the power steering due to the cheap and poorly designed P.S pump. This "lifestyle choice" car is still sold without a remedy for this deadly BMW known fault.

This conflicts with what makes a good car good.
IMHO, cars generally work better with steering, dont you think?
A lack of steering could even be seen as contradictory to peoples opinion of what makes a car a good car.
As an aside Mini's also have a shockingly poor reliability rating equalled only by the shoddy build quality ratings.

Intelligent car buyers measure a car upon 2 main things.
1.construction and quality
2.mechanical component integrity

These things are lost on Mini buyers who have different criteria.
1. how many shiny bits can be bought from the "BMW lifestyle" catalogue
2. do the sticky bits match my jumper collection and the tat stuffed into the car

Yep, I can see why we are so jealous.

I cant see why its such a problem! It looks far nicer than most of the Euro boxes. People should really get over the old Mini. In the old days "Mini" was the model today its the make, no different to Ford Ka, Ford Focus, Ford Mondeo etc etc!
Its simple, if it offends you dont buy one!

Why do Mini owners feel this banal NEED to justify the ruddy thing in the first place?
All the "Mini greatness" attitude does for me is confirm the claimee's absolute ignorance and does nothing at all to alter the vehicles mechanical short comings. Of which there are many.

Have you considered that others really may know better ? Have you ever considered that many MINI buyers buy them DESPITE their image ?

PS pump known fault by who ? You? Does it affect R56 models or just Gen 1? MINI Warranty £300/year anyway.

Now. If you ignore image (I can, maybe you can too, unless it's so important to you?), can you think of a better quickish hatch than a 4-year old MCS with 30K on the clock for £8K ? Please come up with an alternative, it's an honest question.

I now really believe this is sheer jealousy though.

I think you'll find that is on cars at least 6 years old, of course no other manufacturers have ever had problems have they?

Renaults with bonnet catches
Toyota with "unexpected acceleration" etc etc etc.

I'd love to know if a car has ever gone through it's life without a manufacturing defect occuring to any of the cars at all. THAT would be the car to buy.

Wow, where to start with that little lot...

Look in my 'garage' which has the cars I've owned in date order (the bottom up, from 2000) to the present day, I don't fall into either of those stereotype categories you've blindly thrown together, so where do you see me? Oh and bear in mind that a) I've never bought anything from a lifestyle catalogue in my entire life, and b) both my Minis have been faultless, and my first Mini did circa 20k miles without putting a single foot wrong.

Is this the poor man version of the poor man's Range Rover? ie. A poor man Evoque?

I feel I should instantly hate it - and I do but I cannot help but like the shot of the rear quarters.

and the rear seats look quite a nice place to be for a short person for a short period of time.

I think they are for one cheek each, leaving no pressure on the spine,. Nice thinking, should be comfy in the back!

I ummm ummmm dont think its terrible. Especially if it stops Mrs Fatty banging her Mini door into my car while trying to get out of one.

Maybe terribly expensive.

And the badges at the back arent good, neither the chrome on the rear lights...

The "PH Mini hate" mentality Puzzles me too tbh.
Great cars imho, yes I've driven most of the variants including the coupe and countryman.
BMW drivers don't indicate
Audi drivers are wkers
Porsche drivers are wkers
Aston drivers are elitist wkers
Ford drivers are thieves or dole cheats
Bentley Continental drivers are chavs
MX-5 drivers gay or hairdressers
BMW Mini drivers are gay, estate agents, hair dressers or clueless school run mums

And if I've made a grammatical or spelling mistake I'll be lambasted. wink

These are the rules of PH. Man up and get over it. winkbiggrin

What an over simplistic analysis.

All cars are "Life Style Choice" after all we choose them to suit our way of life. Whether that is posing, taking the kids out, towing the horse box, blasting around the lanes or a "fun car" as you claim.
It's good to have some variety out there.

I think a lot of people see the word 'MINI' in a news article and have decided they don't like before even reading. The Paceman is not a bad looking car from any angle, certainly much better than the DS3 which everyone raves about.

It does seem a bit pointless though, particularly with just two rear seats.

Models needed in MINI lineup:

A Mini.

A fast version.

A convertible, if you really have to.

Although I'll concede that people seem to like a diesel these days, the rest of the cars they're trying to flog are pointless.

Anyone else noticed that motoring journalists are no longer referring to that coupe thing as hideous anymore? It still is!

As I said in that other thread, I wish they'd changed the front too and made it less brutish and svelte like the rear. Missed opportunity to avoid building another abomination.

Actually I'm being unfair. It's not too bad really. There are worse things in life, like a kick to the nuts or a bird poo in the eye.
The front could be better to match the rest of the car. Something like the headlights on the Clubman concept versions would be ok.
What the fk is that, the Polly Pocket MINI??????????????confusedyikes
