Why don't Mini go the other way? Make a (new) Fiat 500 sized one?

MINI

Length 2011–present: 146.8 in (3,729 mm)
Width 66.3 in (1,684 mm)
Height 55.4 in (1,407 mm)

500

Length 139.6 in (3,546 mm )
Width 64.1 in (1,627 mm)
Height 58.6 in (1,488 mm)

Take a good 7 inches off the MINI and give it some nice styling, make it very light etc. So it finally lives up to the name of Mini...

Otherwise I'll stick with my 998 (let's be honest, I'd stick with that no matter what BMW do)

The problem Mini have got is the Americans (target market) have recognised Countryman as tat and won't buy it; hence the urgent restyling. Meanwhile Mini, Fiat 500 and Fiesta are selling well in North America.

The "other way" as in vertically? Why is the 500 so tall?

I think they're planning to, or at least they were looking at it:

People often think there are a lot of Mini haters on this site and perhaps this is so - but I'm not one, I love our Mini hatch JCW to bits, best car I've ever owned!!

But I am very aware of it's faults - it is very overpriced if you arn't VERY careful with the options list and offers a lot less in terms of percieved interior build quality (and some external as well) compared with some similarly priced (£25k) oponents. Most interesting is when I look at a similarly priced BMW and see the far better plastics, trims and componentry!

But where my Mini is pretty unique in its branded offering in the B-class segment, these bigger Mini are having to compete in a very different field and can't argue that there is a £12k version that has to be included in the build programme, these bigger and more expensive cars are now competing with with Golfs, 1-series and Yeti!

Here it all falls down and even the performance issue takes a kicking as the engines don't deliver enough grunt for the extra size.

So I have to agree with all the haters - these cars arn't good enough, have odd rather than cute styling and I think devalue the brand that I love! That they are also built in Austria just adds more fuel to the fire.

As ugly as the countryman is, in Europe it's selling like hotcakes, I've just had 2 weeks in Spain and seen lots of them. And the Spanish aren't exactly flush at the moment.

Yes and I have no idea why, do you ? It's not like anyone HAS to buy one. I recently asked if it was due to frustration or jealousy. I got insulted in return for that as "jealousy" is the default answer here apparently, so it deffo can't be that.

The "PH Mini hate" mentality Puzzles me too tbh.
Great cars imho, yes I've driven most of the variants including the coupe and countryman.
BMW drivers don't indicate
Audi drivers are wkers
Porsche drivers are wkers
Aston drivers are elitist wkers
Ford drivers are thieves or dole cheats
Bentley Continental drivers are chavs
MX-5 drivers gay or hairdressers
BMW Mini drivers are gay, estate agents, hair dressers or clueless school run mums

And if I've made a grammatical or spelling mistake I'll be lambasted. wink

These are the rules of PH. Man up and get over it. winkbiggrin

Try listening maybe? Have you considered that others really may know better?
Have you ever considered that many MINI buyers buy them DESPITE their image ?

PS pump known fault by who ? You? Does it affect R56 models or just Gen 1? MINI Warranty £300/year anyway.

Now. If you ignore image (I can, maybe you can too, unless it's so important to you?), can you think of a better quickish hatch than a 4-year old MCS with 30K on the clock for £8K ? Please come up with an alternative, it's an honest question.

I now really believe this is sheer jealousy though.

Mini owners would knowingly buy Mini "DESPITE their IMAGE" if they understand very little about cars and are too concieted to listen to people who know a bit about cars.
The worst part?
These angry efforts to convince those who know better to believe the marketing spiel. Then how the Mini Appreciation Club berate them when they dont fall for it too. (others really do know better, remember)

Did you consider that Mini drivers are maybe very easily pleased and then too ashamed to admit their mistake?

And you believed them again,
this comedy Warranty pays for accident repairs too does it?
Answer me this.
What good is a warranty if your mid-bend and the steering goes?
rofl Did marketing tell you a mechanic will jump out from behind a hedge to fix it before you crash through a wall?
And you fell for that too! wobbleblahnutssilly

Theres a huge choice of far better cars for that kind of money, try asking someone who knows.

Jealous of what? The M.A.C's keep bleating "jealous" without embellishing.
Strange this rediculously whiney whinge is so well suited to the image I have of Mini, erm,, enthusiasts.

Err...

On what basis do you think you know more than me about cars ? What's your background ? Do you favour a chassis with a high polar moment of inertia like the MINI hatch or do you prefer the reassurance of lower PMOI? What toe setting do you prefer ? Do you like cars where you can adjust the camber front and rear like the MINI which allows me to run an almost neutral balance ? Or do you not care ? Do you like modulation in brake set up or do you prefer an over-servoed pedal ? Do you understand suspension kinematics ? I could carry on.... Don't judge a book by its cover. Get rid of your prejudice. There are a lot of very knowledgable MINI owners. It's actually a great chassis to start in motorsport http://www.minichallenge.co.uk/ Talking of which, how many years in the UK motorsport industry do you have behing you to claim to be an authority on car dynamics ? In other words, who are you ?

I know you struggle with reading but the PS pump issues (still not sure what you're on about with this one btw) have been eliminated with the R56 MINI launched in 2006, which has NO steering pump.

You still haven't mentioned any better alternative than a 4 year old MCS at £8K.

Again, I DON'T CARE ABOUT IMAGE, MARKETING OR GADGETS. I test drove a MINI hatch and bought it for the way it drives. Do you get it ?

Guess what there is not such thing as a typical MINI owner. They're bought by all kind of people, idiots and people who are not such idiots, a bit like people on PH, clearly. Have you been to school at all ?

I had a good look at a Countryman in Tescos carpark the other day, I could not believe how fugly it was at the front. It does amaze me why people buy these when there are so many other cars that are more practical, drive better and are far prettier for less money.

The original BMW Mini is great, I've driven a Cooper S and really liked the way handled, but these spin-offs look ridiculous.

Oh dear. My wife had the power steering fail, and was able to drive ten miles. Then she couldn't park the mini.

A little mis-directed knowledge is a dangerous thing..... wink
