Whats an acceptable insurance price on an S2000 then? Mine is £600 (£604 to be exact), i'm guessing alot of you are seeing much more scary numbers coming up?
I'm in my early twenties, the cheapest I've ever been quoted for an S2000 is a hair over £2k... With a massive excess. More typical is £3k-£4k. My (no where near as modified) MX5 costs about £700 to insure. Ive been quoted for adding an exhaust on and it barely made a difference.
Yes, there are many other cars available at this price point and yes, you probably won't see the £2k again come resale. That's just an unfortunate side effect of modifying any car. Personally I only think that matters if your only intending keeping the car a short while.
If it does seem too difficult to get over spending 1/3 of a cars value on a few go-faster bits, just buy a more expensive one.

I've a feeling that whilst an owner might get their £2K's worth from it - it won't be enough to make the car stand-out over the stock item!?!?
Surely no cars would ever get modified if everyone thought this way though? Mk1 I think with some choice performance enhancements a nicer and more rewarding car to drive for an 'enthusiast'..Mk3's onwards are for those wanting a 'bit' of poke with better build quality and newer reg number.. a sorted Mk3 with a shed load of body braces, decent suspension and a proper wheel alignment isn't a bad car to drive with vigour, much, MUCH better than standerd, more precise, better turn in etc.
All horses for courses, S2000's rev like nutter, but use oil, expensive to insure for what you get, anything with a Porsche badge will always win in the 'label snobbery stakes' but real world ownership can be frightfully expensive! As for TT's and E46's..er..not for me. I still have my balls....
Yes some will consider the Mazda as a girlie car, but a good (even BBR Turbo mk1) is cheap, quick fun and not enough to worry about if you bin it on a track day!
Mazda need to sort their act out and offer a 180bhp (or similar) from the showroom, I know a load of MX5 owners club members would bite their left arm off for one with a bit more oomph! Far too many 40+ year olds out there with disposable income for reliable, local dealer maintained, fashionable sports car....and yes I used to work for a Mazda dealer, and saw the buyers!

The mk3 does not need extra body braces in fact I removed the front strut brace on mine as it was doing nothing.
The align/geo can transform these cars & anyone running on stock settings needs it sorting ASAP.
Roddison Motorsport (roddo) on here set mine up & wow!
Mazda May make the GT, 205bhp ITB's etc etc but if you read the reports they dought it will pass the ever quieter trackday DB limits.
The race cars are limited to alterations, I am not hence seeing what is possible.
Everyone's idea of a fun car is different, I wanted newish, agile & playfull.

Just for a laugh, how about a rotary version of a MK1?

What other 2.0 convertible can you buy, same year, same power output, same rewarding chassis?
You can buy a S2000 for £4k for a start and that has 240bhp as standard. Great on a track, not so great in everyday use.
Also how heavy is the S2000 ?
IIRC 200kg more than the MX5

Where has it got 240bhp - ah yes for a split second after waiting for ages for the revs to climb.

Also more to purchase - £6k will pick you up a 2007 sport MX5, 50k miles etc, similar age S2000 you're looking at £9k? - you can't exactly compare the cars on a like for like basis, as they're at different prices in the market, but BOTH cars offer a lot of value for money.Great on a track, not so great in everyday use.
