Why would you spend a million pounds on a number plate?
My thoughts exactly. Wouldn't spend £50 on a plate. Does it make your car drive better? All a bit sad, shallow, childish, vain really (IMHO)...

It will be a foreign plate. There is indeed a Guernsey plate "1" but I'd imagine the one which roams West London comes not from South but from East of the UK.
See above. Dubai plate.
yep, here's a pic of it. Is on UK style plastic plate, hence some confusion - even though it's yellow plated at the front.

You want a laugh, put "1" in askmid.

X5 is currently on an original RHD Daytona Spider.
Belongs to the guy that used to own Bramleys on the A 281 south of Guildford in (oddly enough) Bramley.
Seen some fantastic cars in there over the years, including the Daytona that he had for years and he told me he would never sell it. He didn't, he sold the business minus the Daytona!

A chap in Chelsea has "2 BE" and "NOT 2B", on a RR and Vanquish, parked outside his Chelsea townhouse. Must be worth a pretty penny...

Forgive me for asking but why is this plate worth £1 million?
Wouldnt A1 be worth more? Nope I dont see it....
Neither do I.

My great uncle, Trevor Laker, used to own the A1 number plate which he then gave to charity. It was later briefly owned by Dunlop's. All that can be found in the Guinness Book of Records.
Personally I think they are well over rated and only used to make your ageing car look newer than it is, so that you can try and impress the neighborhood. If you are fortunate enough to find THE car that you really feel connected to then it will have a timeless quality about it, and the value and prestige of such 'private' plates stuck on it will simply be superfluous.

That's a coincidence, I saw the plate X 3 today and mused about how much it might be worth.

It was on a black Mercedes Class Cabriolet, I think it was only a 250 CDI.

Regtransfers had this up for 500k until recently. Tom Hartley, the Supercars dealer bought it Earlier this year for a hell of a lot less than that and stuck it on his Audi a3 runaround.

I suspect the press coverage of the one off mclaren x1 has driven him to chance his arm and stick it up for a million, knowing he'll get all this exposure. I reckon if he gets more than 100k for it, he'll still make a nice profit.

Belongs to an actor/director and his actress wife. I forget their names, ironically, as they're both uber-famous. Vanessa Redgrave? Something like that.

A few years back a local couple had 'H15' and 'HER5' reg plates on a white E60 M5 and a white E90 M3 saloon.

I always wondered if the plates were worth more than the cars they were on.

I saw a plate last w/e which read 'NIC 1'

How does that work, is it an old NI plate?
It's an old Irish Republic plate. Bear in mind that Ireland gained independence in 1921, and became a republic in 1949, plates still crossed from Irl to GB until the 1970's or 1980's under some dubious shady dealing by the DVLA of the day. To be slightly less sceptical, it probably stems from the originally joined-up registration system of the day, ensuring that there was no duplication of plate between The Irish Republic, Northern Ireland and the UK. I nearly fell over when I saw ZIM 1 on the Zimbabwe Embassy Mercedes a while back; looked it up on the DVLA website, and saw it was recognised as a legitimate UK plate. The 'IM' and 'ZM' numberplates come from my native Galway; my mum had a Beetle back in the day with the plate NIM 286 - so ZIM 1 would have been on a late 60's or very early 70's car.
More on the system here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_...

Ironically, the Republic of Ireland doesn't permit plate transfers, so it's weird that another country accepted Irish plates into their system. I believe the practice has now ended.
