If they do want to sell FWD car's it should be under a separate brand name IMO
Or they could buy PSA and fix it.
BMW sell more 4wd cars than rwd. It's only in a limited set of markets (the UK being a large one) where they don't sell xDrive on regular 3ers and 5ers.Or they could buy PSA and fix it.
In that context, fwd isn't that big a change.
On your other point - buy PSA and fix it - PSA haven't closed a factory for years and are paying the price for that. If they restructure properly they will be profitable again.

Yup... they need to de-unionise, but in a country like France I have my doubts just how feasible that would be.C
I agree they should have a separate brand, although the photo of the 1 series is funny. People don't *just* buy BMWs because they're RWD though. It just happens to be one the many facets of it being a high-end-ish car. The rest would be the interior build quality and engine quality, and then the image of having a high-end-ish car.
One of the reasons I cross Audis off my list of possible used car buys is that they're either FWD or AWD.
I like the simplicity of an F/R layout.
I also like the feeling of being pushed.

Most car owners don't know anything at all about - for example - their car's suspension geometry or the internals of the transmission. They will still have a subjective opinion of how the car drives, though, which will be based on their own experiences and those of others who have driven it and written or broadcasted about it.
Those people who don't know which end the snow chains go on may not know or care which end of the car is driven, but they will have based their decision to purchase in part upon the opinions of people who do. That doesn't mean BMW must not do it - for instance, Evo preferred a front wheel drive Renault to the Subaru BRZ, so I expect they will be perfectly satisfied by a front drive five series

A highly controversial conclusion, made more so by comparing an automatic N/A to a manual turbo and then complaining about power delivery.jbi said:

Indeed - but if they are going to behave like that, they will have no grounds to complain if the likes of BMW decide that even the enthusiast press don't care about rear drive any more. Turbocharged front drive four pot M cars with active sound synthesis, they're the future! Grandad7184 said:
