Am I crazy for considering buying this sleeper?

Yeah I went a bit mental with the camera phone as I was a bit excited at all the prospective new toys. Uploading the pics one by one took ages but was well worth it.
The fact is in the UK labour costs, the need for a reliable motor and storage space prevented me from really making the leap and buying a classic. Plus I pretty much always had the intention of tinkering with an old motor so I feel slightly less guilty slotting in something tasty when the previous owner has already banged in the ubiquitous nissan or toyota hum drum engine.
Really hoping to do the whole project with photos etc to look back upon in years to come. Just trying to work out parts availability and whats do-able at the moment. Plus I have never really viewed classics before and am learning new things like if a rat crawls in and dies the smell is awful and you'll never get rid of it. Especially at 33 C.
Many thanks for the interest though!

Yes you are completely and utterly certifiable for even considering any of those old sheds here in the land of smiles, but definitely not of car maintenance. There are no bargain sheds here. You're paying 2000 GBP for a car you couldn't give away in the UK.
Take that money and put a deposit on something sensible, then pay it off at 6-7000 THB a month, rather than spending fortunes on a knacker. I was virtually given an old car here and it was more headaches than it was worth!
If I was going to do a lairy conversion I'd be getting a 4-5 year old pick up truck with knackered engine and sourcing a more powerful engine for it.
The Escorts might be fun though!

My Escort engine conversion plans involve a 2.1 zetec turbo, I cant afford to go the Cosworth route and it wouldnt be worth it to me. I'm probably going to keep the 'Finesse' and '1.6' badges, maybe the steels as well. Should be good for around 300'ish bhp depending on the turbo.
If the one here already has had a transplant I'd be inclined to take whatever wiring has been added for the engine looms and see what else would go, or be prepared to strip out quite a lot and start again.
Escort'd definitely be the cooler car, but possibly more aggro to get it how you want it. Volvo looks like you could jump in and drive it as is
