I've recently moved from France to live in Florida, and this week I will finally be able to get a Floridan driving licence and buy a car. So after nearly two months of renting two cars, the time is coming to make a choice.

The family + dog lugger - one of the cars we rented was a Dodge Grand Caravan. Clever seats that disappear into floorpan recesses, 280 hp V6, a bit clunky but not bad. Certainly more fun than the diesel Espace, so a reasonable compromise.

So now the fun but practical car - sold my 993 turbo in France and now want a propulsion with enough room in the back for a couple of kids. This is my opportunity for a bit of american muscle, so have been debating the option. Currently have a Dodge Challenger on rental and it's good looking and OK to drive, even if the engine is a bit lazy and needs another 150 hp and I'm not crazy on automatics.

So all that to ask, if you were looking for a fun 4 seater, propulsion, front engined in the US, what would you go for? American muscle like a Mustang, Camaro or Challenger? Big engined BMW or Merc? Another option is a Porsche Panamera - ugly (IMO) but loads of them on the roads here. Any other ideas welcome.

Hopefully later it'll be time for the purely fun car, but I want a garage first. Current rental only has a car port.

I'd absolutely go cheap US muscle rocketship, and scratch that itch. If possible, I'd be going US classic muscle, rather than the latest crop.

Failing that, some sort of tricked up Camaro or Challenger (notthat keen on the Mustang), for sure.

I'd have a Camaro ZL1. Not because it's the best (a Mustang GT500 is reputedly a better car) but because I love the styling and it's epically quick!

One of the big power Caddy's? CSV or something? Big power, european handling, 4 seaters, and I believe you can even get a wagon too!

Got to be US Muscle. Whichever one floats your boat, but I'd definitely take the opportunity to do that while out there.

I bought a P71 Crown Vic, an Impreza for the girlfriend and a Mustang GT.

If I was you with the 4 door requirement I'd consider either a Charger or SRT8 Jeep. The hemi is a fanastic engine.

Budget?

Remember American cars are designed to be modified. If you want more power, more revs and more noise. It's all easily available.

Maybe keep an eye out for a 2003/4 Mustang Cobra, very capable cars. Lots of rather cool retro options available too, maybe some late 60's or 70's muscle should be considered?

How much do you want to spend? Hard to ignore the value of the latest generation of Mustang/Camaro. $25k for a V6, $30k for a V8, also cheap to lease if you want to go down that route.

Question?

Do you requiree a US driving license to buy a car?
Your foreign driving license is enough for a year.

Options......... PLENTY!

US muscle is cheap!

Camaro is a nice choice
Corvette ZO6 also nice smile C5 had 405bhp, the newer C6 505bhp, you can get them for a fairly reasonable price.

Yes, by jingo, when we put our minds to it we can fail at building even the most exciting of cars.

Also the US won't let you have one. Not enough airbags. Land of the mostly free.
