Great video, especially the interview. More technical discussions like this please.

Norbert Singer wrote a great book about his Porsche Le Mans campaigns:

Now THAT is 'my' version of Le Mans. A huge straight with its unique challenge. Raw, engaging cars too!

This car and Derek Bell are the reasons why even now I prefer Porsche to Ferrari and also why I started smoking. Who says tobacco advertising in sports wasn't effective? biggrin

Good points. Those two are the reason I don't weep when hundreds of 911s drive past in the morning with slap headed accountants who have never been out of third gear behind the wheel and why I never think of Ferrari as a racing company, despite F1 oddly.

Great vid, car, bloke!

That said if Mr.Harris has now got a taste for dishing up nice retro Le mans racers then this should surely be next up. The Porsche sounded good but not quite this good!

There's a longer version of that Best Motoring video (at least I think they are the same). What amused me on the in car footage was the driver doesn't really even get out of 2 gear most of the way round. Wonder if the 962 was geared the same way?

Mr. Singer has also written an excellent book on Porsche's 16 Le Mans victories (he was involved with all of them) called 24:16. Very highly recommended, it's one of the best motorsport related books I've ever read.
Sold out amazon.co.uk, but still available at amazon.com.
Check it out!

Edit: maybe still available? At 10 quid it's an absolute bargain!

When I put up the second amazon link, two secondhand books were still available. I reckon the secondhand book salesmen must be wondering why they sold all of a sudden?

But even at 23 pound still a very nice read. Get it while you still can!

Awesome video once again. Your car CV has just gone into melt down. Not much left to do now, aside from an F1 car!

I hate that Porsche 962.

My brother and I and tens of thousands of other Brits descended on Le Mans to see the Silk Cut Jaguars finally wrench the 24 Heures off Porsche. Let's not beat about the bush: the 956/962 dominance of Group C racing and LM in particular up until that point was just plain boring. That 962 made it 7 wins in a row for Porsche. We had to wait another year for Jaguar to win. That's when it got more interesting for me and other manufacturers seriously joined in (Mercedes, Mazda, Nissan, Peugeot, Toyota etc.), rather than it being just the might of Porsche versus the masses of underfunded Privateer teams.

Whereas I hated it when Porsche finally lost in '88 - all because Ludwig tried to do an extra lap in the 17 car.

I'm delighted you were there to witness this car's LM victory though. In '87 the other manufacturers were racing at LM: Sauber Mercedes withdrew after qualifying, the Mazdas raced in their own class (as ever), Toyota had a pair of factory 87Cs, Nissan had a trio of March-built works cars and Jaguar were getting beaten again. The only one missing from your list was Peugeot.

Hi All,

Another great video, really are becomming my highlight of Thursdays!

I have a techie question, what are the vents on the rear axle that look like standard car suspension turrets. Looks like they vent the discs or wheel bearings or what!?

Cheers
Ed.
I think they are the cooling ducts for the rear discs, i think the air was directed in and down from a naca duct on top of the body, done this way so there was no intrusion into the ground effect tunnels each side of the car, however, happy to be corrected.
