I just did mine online. Apparently I am supposed to cut the existing licence in half & send to DVLA.

I'm a bit reluctant to send in the old licence until I have the new one. Has anybody here renewed online?

These photo licences are pain when you have to renew every 10 years, at your own expense, makes me glad I've still got a paper one that lasts me till I'm 70 odd, as long as I don't move house.

I didn't send it back. The police haven't come knocking yet.

I forgot to send mine back and realised quite a while later and I never heard anything from them.

Thanks guys. I was just concerned that they might not send out the new licence until they get the old one.

Absolutly, just a pain when occasionally I'm required to show a photo ID.

Or hire a car, particular in the USA.

Really? Never had a problem but last time I hired in the States was 5 or 6 years ago. Are they getting touchy about British paper licences? I'm off there in January nd may well want a car as I'm there for 2 weeks.

This year at the age of 56 I was for the first time in my life asked for photo id to buy a beer in the USA. biggrin

Thanks, if it's just getting a beer that's a problem I go to a different bar. I'll stick with my paper licence. I'm also 56 smile

I asked if I would still have got the beer if I was not carrying photo ID, in this driving licence. Apparently they call the manager for a decision. laugh

Genuine question.

Does having the old paper only licence really cause issues hiring a car in the US, as surely one cannot get any better photo id than your passport which as a UK resident/citizen travelling to the US one would presumably have on ones person?

No problem at all, returned last week from California and had no problem using my paper license and passport as ID for renting from Hertz.

What's the penalty if you don't renew it? I have the renewal letter I just forgot to do it, it's a month out of date.

I should just renew now. Doubt there will be a penalty unless you are stopped by police as they won't know that you were driving.
