There's pages and pages of talk about the 801 and 806, I'm going to break from the norm here and praise and sing about the SJCAM SJ 4000. It's pretty much a clone of the GoPro. I also own a GoPro and it's pretty hard to tell the different in vid quality both night and day use. Packed with features inc car mode, rear screen, switch mode, wifi, motion mode ect, box comes packed with accessories as standard all for a fraction of the GoPro £70

Mines perminatly fixed as a dash cam, it's a tiny cam and hides behind the rear view mirror and worked flawlessly for months.

Mr Technomoan has given a great review too.
I've just bought one of these. Will keep you posted.
I got one of these given for Christmas
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/QUMOX-W-Action-Sport-Cam...
I will post the results up when I get to use it. I'm waiting for the car mount.

Polarising lens for the camera. Mount is the same for 0806 as 0803 although there is also a 'parking mount' option as well - I've not gone for this but I have gone for the filter and GPS version of the camera (my 0803 has GPS so it made sense to do so).

I'll post my thoughts too when it arrives.
Good to hear it uses 0803 mount. Advert on joovoo said mini and micro?

Anyway that's good I can stick the new mount in the back or in the Mrs car

I pre ordered mine from there.

I'm only going on what I've read about the mount being the same, it's a good idea if it is.

There's a perminant car mount that comes with it within all the fixtures. It has 3M sticky fixer along with cradle (don't use waterproof case)

OK I'm just about to press the button on an E-Prance 0801 when I see some have got the £23 eBay HD720P Cheapy here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301060558377?_trksid=p20...

Having seen the uploaded video I'm impressed! Dont need a screen and want this to stay in the car and come on/off with the ignition and loop. Couple of questions:

1) What class Micro SD card do I need and the best size
2) How big will the files be for say 1hr continuous play so I can work out the overwrite time?

Thanks

I'm in the market for one. Absolutely no idea what to go for. Only criteria is hi-res, gps, can be hard-wired, wide viewing angle and a smallish device. Not fussed either way, about having a viewing screen.

May well buy 2 - to cover both front and rear.

I'm guessing the 0806 might be the way to go

The Mini 0801 has proven to be very reliable as long as it's running the latest firmware and uses a brand make of Micro SD card Samsung class 6 for example, from personnel experience my two (front & rear) have been faultless for well over a year and are still going strong, I have found that hardware installing them using a dedicated voltage converter has improved the reliability. I also have a Mini 0803 but I find the image quality to be a bit iffy.

But I have recently changed my car and will be installing two of the new Mini 0806 cameras which are getting some rave reviews from the guys who are testing them before release...a marked improvement over the 0801 & 0803.

The 0806 appears to be a very much improved 0801, especially in low light conditions. As far as I'm aware it will be available with GPS if required and can be hard-wired. I think wide viewing is standard on these cameras. The built-in LCD screen is actually very useful for initial set-up, for info the LCD screen switches off after a few seconds in real time use so isn't a problem. Must say the 0801 is one of the smallest dash cams I've encountered so is hidden away by the rear view mirror.

The things that I like about this soon to be released 0806 are the massive dual 128GB card capabilities and the improvements in low light video footage. If it's all black without the silly silver back-plate shown on the pre-release pics I will be even more impressed.

The inexpensive 0801 offers exceptionally high quality 1080p video footage in daylight conditions, but falls down in low light or night-time, but is nevertheless pretty good in providing video footage in the event of a bump late at night. I paid just under £45 for my 0801 which came with a 16GB card. It eats approx 100MB per minute so will provide approx 16 minutes of video which should be ample in the event of an accident just so long as you remember to eject the card before the accident footage is over-written.

EDIT: As Mr Happy pointed out, my calculations on recording lengths are somewhat flawed, and as he quite rightly pointed out, the recording length using a 16GB card with the 0801 dash cam is approximately 160 minutes NOT 16 minutes - oops!!!

Argh, was well and truly carved up by a van driver tonight - thought I'd pull the footage to see if there was anything I'd done wrong but no, the bloody 7900ARA hadn't bothered to record any of it.

After doing a bit of digging, turns out it was my own daft fault - I'd upgraded to a 16gb card from an 8gb one, and just copied the config over - the config was set for the wrong size of card and rather than just reformat itself like most other dash cams, it was flasing "For" on the back of the unit. Once rectified, it's working again.

I'm really not getting on very well with this 7900 so unless it earns its keep over the next few months, it's going to go the journey frown

Btw Rich - 100mb/min x 16gb != 16 mins! Its more like 160 mins of footage ((100mb x 10 = 1000mb (1gb-ish)) x 16) smile

2 questions:

1: So once the 16gig is full, does it start overwriting itself - so basically at any time, you'll have the last 16 minutes of footage?

2: If you start a new journey tomorrow, does it start at point 0, or does it continue from where it last stopped?

Apologies if these are numpty questions.

Kinky: Most cams overwrite the earliest saved file unless it is in a specific subdirectory (or is marked Read Only by the camera).

You'll have whatever footage is on the cam at the point of the incident, plus - depending on the camera model, an incident file which is generally the preceding 15 seconds and the following 30 seconds of an 'event'. Some will do better than that, giving you the preceding and following minute or two.

In normal use, they just roll around and around, overwriting as they go until something of interest happens. Depending on the sensitivity, that can be anything from a crash, to simply clipping a cats eye as you change lanes!

Yes, they over-write the earlier files, oldest first and this only starts when the card is full - its unaffected by the date or time.

If anyone would be interested in my 0803 when the 06 arrives please drop me a line. There is a minor scratch on the lens which has no effect on the daylight performance but does result in some slight 'bloom' with oncoming headlights at night. It's a niggle really and I'd be happy to upload footage of both day and night performance if anyone's interested. To be frank, if the 06 wasn't coming out, it's not severe enough that I'd bother replacing the 03.

1: Once the 16GB card is full it over-writes the earliest data unless you have protected it.

2: It continues from the last point it stopped

And 3: as Mr Happy quite rightly pointed out, a 16GB card at 100MB per minute will provide 160 minutes recording time [NOT 16 minutes as I stated] before it loops round and records over the earliest footage!!! Good job I'm not an accountant!!!

Incidentally, do a search on YouTube for 'Techmoan and 0801' because he provides some very useful reviews of the 0801 dash cam along with info on setting up the dashcam which is rather better than the official user manual.

Hope this helps - in the meantime do a search on YouTube for 'Russian Dash cams' which may make you realise why you do indeed need a dash cam!!!

As I posted earlier on this thread:

I purchased an 0801 model from Amazon which cost just under £45 including a 16GB memory card and delivery. The delivery time was very fast. Can't comment on the after-sales because the dash cam has worked flawlessly to date.

Link is: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00IKEVSOU this dash cam works perfectly well for me and the video quality in the day-time is excellent, though not so good when the light levels are low or at night time.

If you would prefer to buy from ebay then I have it on good authority that this ebay seller offers excellent service and backup, and are based in Leicestershire so rather easier to deal with than flying over to China.

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/COMBI-LTD/Car-Camera-/_i....

Note that the 0801 is still available, though the 0803 has been replaced by the 0805.

One further suggestion is to watch the TechMoan video reviews on YouTube which provides excellent information on how to set the dash cams up, I say this because the supplied instruction manuals are in Engrish so not the best!

Mini 0801 review is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdPHXv8Hzj8
Mini 0803 review is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LWOq62cY6U

You can download a few one minute video clips taken from my 0801 and decide for yourself whether the quality is good enough, links shown below:

https://mega.co.nz/#!4MZUEbqZ!-Z5Vz5lUhqMu4p-N2QH3...

https://mega.co.nz/#!YRJGkAya!aq5EvUeAfqnP3m-8TwgR...

Each one minute video clip is approx 100MB in size and is .MOV format which can be played using Quicktime or VLC Media Player.

The Mini0803 looks very good, but read a few comments in the video section about varying quality though due to different people building them.

Wonder whether to just go all out for the Roadhawk RH720 for another compact option, though it is quite expensive, would still have some comeback if it was faulty I imagine.
