Mines always in the car,
yeah but how feasible is that for most people? I can't see how some jerk won't smash a window and steal them. I presume you live somewhere quiet / car's always garaged.

not crashing.
Generally they are for catching other people doing stupid stuff though aren't they? So although you dont plan on crashing, that doesn't mean someone wont crash into you!

Yes, I have to be honest I live in a low-crime area so It's never been something I think about - however it doesn't really stick out at all, especially at night...

Well you think "I'm in the right and can prove it!" so may not take the avoiding action you would normally. Thus, crashing more is likely. Like them knobber cyclists all over youtube with cameras stuck to their heads.

If the police believe it contains evidence of a crime being committed, then i think the answer is "Yes". So if it's running, and you're speeding and you have a prang which plod turn up to then if they notice the camera then I'd expect they'd have it away before you could delete it.

Anything that sticks out is a temptation to a thief. Priority for me is minimum on show, also not having to set it up each time. Permanently wired with a rolling memory too...

I wonder how much of that will go on. If you knew there was something with your car, or you just wanted to get rid of it and get the insurance money it would be extremely easy to go out with one of these cameras and get yourself involved in a collision that was going to appear on camera to be completely the other parties fault.

Keep us updated - my only worries are the usual "electronics coming from HK", and also the fact that it is nearly half the price of the other one... The techmoan review says look for "h.264" format, but yours just says "avi". confused

Pretty sure they need to serve you with a warrant to seize it. Certainly with still photography they cannot (legally) confiscate a memory card without one, don't see why it would be different for videography.

I have a DoD F520 from Taiwan, cracking camera, with reg plates quite easily readable. (Struggles on low light cloudy days though)

However, can't leave it wired in permanently because of car break ins around here being very common, so it's a PITA to get out everytime. It does remember your settings though and as soon as you plug the cigarette lighter power cable in, it switches on and records automatically. (It does have battery too).

If your SD card gets full, it just goes back to the beginning and overwrites earlier files. You can save in 30sec or 1,5,10 and 15 minutes intervals.

I have 2 of these (front and rear). Sadly almost essential with the standard of driving then telling porkies over here!!

Can't remember / pronounce the brand but they are a very neat compact chinese make that I have perminantly mounted and hard wired into the car. A thief would have to be looking very close to notice them!

Check the video output, specifically with regard to reading reg plates and people's faces, mine are HD cameras so pretty good, even in low light

I bought one of them when I was in Sing the other month, saw one in a cab there and thought it was an excellent idea..... cost me about 30 quid and takes some really quite decent video.

The taxi mounted ones here are proving very good at capturing the likes of Ferarri's flying through junctions!!

One of these days I will do an edited highlights of driving antics seen on the roads here from mine, or perhaps a fast frame lap of the island!

I hate ebay, I have to talk myself out of buying tat every time that I go on there. They also do a bluetooth version of this mirror that is controlled from a remote box with reversing sensors and cameras on it, if it also recorded I would have wasted valuable beer money hehe

My Blackvue stays in the car all the time. It's tucked up behind the rear-view mirror (neither driver or passenger can see it from a normal seating position) and the cable runs up the headlining and down the A-pillar. It really isn't noticeable from the outside unless you're specifically looking for it - so many cars have GPS aerials or rain sensors there these days. Precisely no-one has spotted or commented on it yet.

The car mostly lives on the street in North London. I like to think that if some scrote did notice it they might think it was a wired-up bait car and leave it alone. And how much of a (black) market is there for these things? It's not like when satnav theft (and before that, CD players, etc) was all the rage when they were expensive, desirable and relatively rare.

I would be wary of using that line of thought.... I won't notice it in your car as I'm walking past. But you don't need to worry about me seeing it as I'm not going to put your window in to steal something. The people you need to worry about are the ones that are specifically looking for stuff like that.

A half decent camera will cost more than an average tom tom.... you have more faith in the general public than I do if you think they won't steal one if they know its there.

Being in the security/CCTV industry, I've seen a lot of these in car camera/data recorders at the security exhibitions, they Chinese ones are all about the same quality, fairly good, but personally, I've been looking at the smart witness ones for our vans.....

www.smartwitness.com/vehiclecctv

After seeing 100+ on display, that had the best quality recording, the camera lens had a very wide angle with the least distortion to the edges of the picture. Obviously not as cheap as the Chinese ones.
