Agreed - what the hell was the people carrier thinking?

BMW driver messed up.
MPV driver was either not thinking, or wanted to prove a point.

Do you know what the camera used there is?
I'd like to know too. In the market to buy one - but absolutely no idea what. But that quality/info is very impressive.
I don't know what brand of dash cam was used in this footage but I fitted a non GPS E-PRANCE 0801 dashcam a few months ago which records in full 1080p, and I've been well impressed with it to date, and at approx £45 from Amazon which included a 16GB micro SD card what is there not to like. I've since played with a 128GB card which was a waste of time because of the 32GB partition limit of FAT32 that these dash cams use and have instead settled on a 32GB micro SD class 4 card which works just fine. If you want the ability to record speed and GPS positioning then purchase the GPS version - both are available. If you want better quality at night-time then purchase the 0803 model which offers better night-time video recording. You might actually be better off buying the non GPS version then purchasing a GPS enabled mount which might work out cheaper.

Don't just take my word for it, watch the Techmoan YouTube video reviews of the 0801 and 0803. Ought to mention that I have also in the past purchased far more expensive dash cams, and though they have been good in terms of video quality, the far cheaper 0801 and 0803 dash cams offer superior video quality for a lot less money.

The main thing to pay attention to is the micro SD card, I would recommend 32GB for either model, perhaps class 4 for the non GPS 0801 and class 6 for the GPS 0801, and faster SD cards for the 0803 especially if you opt for the GPS 0803 which may well need a class 10 32GB Micro SD card due to the huge amount of raw data being dumped on it by the dash cam.

And note despite users complaining of problems with large SD cards causing grief in the 0801 I have had no problems whatsoever with fitting a fast SanDisk Ultra 128GB class 10 in my 0801, well except it only recognised 24.77GB so the rest of the space was redundant. Just buy a 32GB.

Don't delete the files or format the card on your computer or the card might be corrupted - always format the SD card when fitted into the dash cam.

I have no regrets over the purchase of the 0801, is very compact so sits discreetly behind the rear view mirror, is easy to set up (after you watch the techmoan video), offers high quality 1080p video which can be copied easily to your mac or PC by ejecting the micro SD card.
Crickey, thanks for the detailed response, food for thought

x2!

I've just bought one of these as an upgrade to my Livue LB100 (which might get relegated to the back window). I've gone for the ARA D Type with external GPS and the OBD hookup box

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191155017369

Video of the OBD functions

Stuck the extra $10 on for 'expedited delivery' so should have it in a week or so from SK, can't wait! biggrin

ETA - have changed to a ARA B Type as the OBD module doesn't seem to work with most western cars. No biggie though, means internal GPS and less clutter! Was informed by the seller that it would be posted today as well.

Further ETA - on checking my emails, FedEx have picked up the package already and it should be here by the 5th! If that happens, then the expedited delivery is the best $10 I've ever spent!!

I've recycled an old Android phone using AutoGuard Black Box app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com....
Auto start-stop,
GPS Speed, location, route tracking
Up to 1080p recording, number plates clearly visible in the video.
Auto impact detection, uploading to YouTube if Impact detected, autodialling of pre-set number after impact
Hugely customisable, and very cheap for the 'pro' version

Downsides? You've a smartphone in a cradle hanging off the 'screen. It gets censoredhot in summer sunshine

Picked up mine from sorting office yesterday, was out when postie tried to deliver it frown
Want to get it hardwired in, had I thought things out better I'd have bought one with the kit included, but never mind.
Tried blutacing it in place to see how noticeable it is & happy to say it's discrete & I'll be happy to leave it in situ (hopefully not tempting fate)

Impossible to comment without knowing what happened beforehand

Scenario 1)
BMW not a local and expected both lanes at major junction to filter right, realised mistake and pulled forward whilst indicating to avoid causing hazard to following traffic

Scenario 2)
BMW a total tt too important to queue and jumped several cars patiently waiting to force his way in at the front

Either way there are no winners here if it becomes an insurance job

Cheers

It was definitely the people carrier who failed to read the situation, or just chose not to, to be awkward.

He probably had a dash cam on too. Couldn't wait to get home and upload it to you tube, or send it to the police and expect a full investigation.. wink

I really dislike the growing popularity with dash cams. A certain type of driver seems attracted to them.

Looking for a camera that shoots 1080p at 60fps.

Any recommendations, I'm about 10 pages in on this thread so will probably be able to answer my own question but if anyone could save me the time biggrin.

I have a cheapy dash cam in each car, just one forward facing one so far.

I took one car into the main dealer for service, didn't consider the camera and so it was left active. Later I did look at the footage and in my requested feedback to the dealer I mentioned that the tech who road tested the car drove considerately, taking care to drive around the pot holes at one particular junction.

A couple of days later I got a call from the dealer principal and I thought it would be to apologise for charging me for a bottle of screen wash that they didn't add to the reservoir nor place in the car.

No such thing. I was berated for not telling them about the camera. Some nonsense about data protection, human rights and one person in the dealership had a phobia about being recorded on CCTV.

Makes you wonder what they want to hide.

I don't blame them. What has happened to our society that we take our vehicle in for work, don't inform them that they will be on camera and then watch it all back after they have finished??!!

It really should be illegal! What an absolute joke. Some may even say sad!

Just taken delivery of an 0803 after someone nearly took me out on Friday night. Ordered the no-internal GPS with 32Gb card and the one E-Prance supplied is a C6 (unbranded but if it dies, I'll just replace it).

Going to fit it in an hour or so. The previous owner of my car fitted two switched 12v adapters in the glovebox so should be able to run into that pretty discreetly which would be perfect. Not sure if it's worth hard-wiring with motion-sensing on?

Others may say if they do the job they are paid to do and nothing else what's the problem. If it catches the few fraudsters then there will be more business for the honest dealers.

Do you want to be secretly filmed all day doing your job? I'm sure you will say yes... It's a very strange view to have though.

My dash cam points to the road, not the driver....

The camera is quite big and easily visible, it's fed from an adaptor with a red light in the cig lighter socket and it makes a noise when it starts and stops recording so it's not exactly covert. It's only active when the ignition is on.

Fancy a dealer charging for something they didn't supply. It really should be illegal!

Mine's all fitted and working beautifully. It works fine on the class 6 card in S.Fine mode as far as I can see (was mentioned by someone earlier that it needed C10...) .

The quality is superb, even in the overcast conditions today. It's also cheap and discreet enough that I don't think I'll have any concerns about leaving it in-situ when parked up.

I've managed to revive my cheapy dashcqm by soldering in a new battery.

I feel good about this.
