Like any rare and collectible car, it's worth what someone will pay for it on any given day. This particular example is in lovely, original condition with low mileage and also has the kudos of being in the rarest colour and being number 499. 65k dreamland...? I don't think so. It's solid money, but someone will buy it at this price.
As for comparisons with other cars, this is futile in the majority of cases, save for perhaps equiavlent metal.
How much do you have to pay for a 23'000 mile, mint and original E30 M3 Sport Evo (of which there were 600 made)...?

The Sierra RS Cosworth was possibly the definitive working man's performance car of the 1980s, the RS500 was the ultimate version of this car, as such there's great love for a "Blue Oval" that would keep many Ferraris honest to 150mph. Tinker with an RS500 and there's enormous power and equally enormous torque available in a car that weighs 1200kg. There's something incredibly satisfying about annihilating modern "quick" cars in a 25 year old jelly mould, but that's hardly a like-with-like comparison...
The RS500 was not built because Ford wanted to build them. I'm sure they would have rather not had to bother - half the reason they farmed out thebutchery conversion to Aston Martin Tickford. The fact that the touring car regulations insisted on them selling 500 road going examples means that they are a very special car - One that was not built to sell in volume, not built as a halo model (arguably that was the RS Cosworth, but even that was a homologation special in it's own right). Equally, the RS500 was not built to counter a rival's product or fill a market niche. The RS500 was built for absolutely no other reason than to allow Ford to wipe the floor with the competition in Gp.A, which they did quite convincingly.
100% motorsport based pedigree. Incredible success on circuits all over the World. Rare. It might have been a homologation special Porsche or Ferrari, but sadly it's got the wrong badge and looks like a Sierra. That's why we are here discussing why it's 65k worth and not why it's only 65k worth...

Read on a bit..."Last known built car, number 500 has not been seen or documented since 1988, and is believed lost for good." - this isn't to say it isn't still in a private collection somewhere (possibly outside the UK) and I'd want definitive proof that 500 had been completely destroyed before parting with anywhere near £65k if that's the main reason for its value. Dream land for a car like this.

king hell, what a waste. Don't believe that someone offered him 62k for it, if they did his a bit of a fool for not taking the cash, lovely cqr though, one of my all time favourites.You'd have to really like sierra's to pay 65k for one!
Trouble is its not exactly a beautiful car to park in a heated garage to just look at but if you use it it will lose much of its value. Also if you do use it it's surely not as much as an 'event' to drive as an equivalent value old Aston/e-type/italian?

Agree with the comment about would be nice to use one as a drivers car and not just a garage queen.
I went to pick up a cylinder head for my GTR last year and the seller's father answered the door and showed me round the garage where his son was stripping his car. In said garage was a rather lovely black RS500 that did look pretty immaculate (and had a 500+ BHP Mountune engine/setup). I assumed it was his son's latest car and got a barrel load of expletives and told that it was far too good for him. Turns out the guy is 72 and has owned it from nearly new (only to replace his moonstone one that was nicked). It's also his track toy and has done 100's of track days/sprints over 2 decades earning him a serious amount of trophies that were all over the garage.
The harness and cage could all be removed without damaging the interior, the original wheels could just be put back on and he had the front end resprayed once a year to take care of the track day stone chipping. 'I bought it to enjoy driving it as fast as possible' he said..
Fair play I thought as I shook his hand! A true petrol head..
