"entry V6 weighs almost 1,600kg. Whether that matters at all depends entirely on what it's like to drive. It SHOULD be brilliant. "
What????
His statement is correct... Most people who buy sports cars are worried about weight or handling to a degree, it's what it looks like and how it makes them feel. If they did cars like the SLK, SL, 6 series and XK wouldn't sell. I suspect in spite of the extra weight the F-Type will do the business. Of late Jaguar have great form in the area of chassis dynamics etc. What????
Looks stunning BTW.. And while it may not be scalpel sharp, if the handling / ride, engine and performance come even close to that way it looks, it will sell pretty well IMO..

This car should be a huge success. It looks fantastic, entry models are priced to remain aspirational but attainable for large segment of the population.
....".A large segment of the population" , what is that ? more than half ? a quarter ?65M people in the country annual new car sales of 1.7M every year
So how many would you expect them to sell per year ? Bearing in mind this is a £58,000 2 seater and the best selling group of new car sales by a vast margin are in the Fiesta/Focus/Corsa/Astra segment i.e circa £15000
A 911 carbrio with PDK is 1.545 Kg (empty weight by EU standards).
So it´s not that far off. Also remember the the jag has a prop shaft and is wider than the Porsche.

I've been thinking about the weight and it is a bit disappointing. My 10 year old E46 M3 Coupe weighs in at around 1550kg, it has a steel construction, a big boot, seats for 4 adults, airbags etc. etc. and (I believe) an iron blocked straight six up front. Yet is still weighs more than an all-aluminium 2 seater sportscar with (I assume) an all alloy V6. How does that work??

Now, will there be a manual transmission of offer?
Jag haven't offered a manual option since about '97 for a premium offering (XK, XJ), I very much doubt they'll change their tune even for a more sporty offering. We'll get flappy paddles and that's it, hope to be proved wrong but can't see it.It was stated at a US Jag event that there will most likely be a manual gearbox offering, but only on more hardcore Coupe models.
The gearbox is also slated for a smaller Jag saloon as well - apparently there's an X-Type replacement coming...
You can see that a manual will be offered - why else use a completely new gearshifter instead of the rotary dial from all the other JLR models? So there's space in the centre console for a real gearstick...

Err, do the people who are bleeting on about weight consider anything heavier than a caterham 7 "lardy" or something? It is a six cylinder luxury convertible/cabriolet that'll almost certainty be jam packed with cutting edge features and technology - I'm amazed it is so light at 1600 kilos.
