Nice to see the PH Porsche hate is alive and well again. LOL.

Normally i struggle with the hybrid/electric thing but that is pretty impressive, 959 comparison is warranted.

Didn't see any sign of Rohrl though - seemed to be suggested at the start he featured...
I get the feeling that's going to be for something officially Porsche in the near future.

Looks an interesting machine and has all the right looks. Can't wait to see this flying lap!

lucky bar steward..I'd be happy reviewing such exotica from the pasenger seat if that was all that was afforded..still would need it to be a hydrocarbon burning evolvement of the Carrera GT - (for the noise alone) to hit all of the right spots for me but an interesting car for porsche and no doubt for the industry and technically a milestone showcase for hybrid tech. Can see the Can Am, Le Man porsche heritage in the design too..despite the '360 nostrils'...

Excellent vid - this is a pioneering drivetrain that will influence not just Porkers but Veedubs too I'll wager.

Stunning. And the fact it can do 07:14 with it's huge weight just shows what an incredible job Porsche have done with it.

I hate myself for this but... did you say 'teached'?

Anyway, interesting video but a bit more in-car time would have been nice! I think the transition to hybrid power is inevitable in the longer term and perhaps one day we'll see an electric only race series!

Not the best they have done

Front of a 360

Rear of an MP4-12C

Not a great combo

I was thinking last night that there is going to be a winner and some loosers in regard to the new super cars coming out but after seeing this video I have a new thought. I think Jaguar is on to a winner by using the 4 cylinder engine, because it is so unique and will draw people away from comparisons with the Porsche, Mclaren and Ferrari. Can't loose when you are the only horse in the race. Perhaps the Porsche 918 will be in a category all by itself if its eco statisitics are so good. That leaves the McLaren and the new Ferrari, these cars seem to be direct competitors being cars as light and powerful as possible where one will be better than the other and both are trying to occupy the exact some area of super cars, being the fastest thing you can buy. I guess McLaren needs to be tught lipped about specs because if Ferrari say there new car has 900hp then McLaren might hvae to retune their P1 to 901hp. One will win and one will loose while the Porsche will define its own market sector.

@3:15 "Are you ready for Race Mode?"

Brilliant.

Of course Porsche has a reputation for evolutionary design, but this just totally redefines the game. It is like how we saw the technology in 959 drive the improvements in the 911 of the next ten years, this will do the same.

The best thing for me about the electrics in the car is how it has inspired them to save weight on everything else. 140kg for a V8 engine? That is astonishing.

1700kg is no mean feat in its own right - a Ferrari 599 GTB is 1690kg - with the Weissach pack the 918 will weigh less.

A wonderful reaffirmation of engineering as a discipline in the 21st century.

Well done Monkey for keeping an open mind - looking forward to seeing your eventual conversion!

This was one of the very few times I've watched the "interview" section of a car video, They don't usually interest me. But this one did. Very informative, and very interesting.

The car looks, and sounds lovely (on the proper motor) and i reckon it's a step in the right direction for super cars of the future.

I liked it, a good video to watch, also the 2 people from Porsche act like "us" the last guy was very informative and good with explaining in English.
Both look friendly and say one of us car nuts biggrin

agree, a 1200kg with 550hp would be "nicer"

but...this car is still amazing and when looking at it like that, I like it.

well done Porsche.

Personally i have absolutely no interest in a "1200kg 600bhp" version. Why? Well, thats been done to death already, it's a one trick pony, just about going fast, that's it.

This (and the P1 / new fezza) are going to bring a lot more to the table than raw speed. It's quite clear that if all you want is pure, raw speed, then just ramping up the IC engines BHP and sticking it into a light chassis is the answer (F1 car anyone?), but this 918 solution enables a range of capabilites so much broader than that simple loads of power, low weight solution.

Currently the downside is cost, with the three new "hyper hybrids" each knocking on the door of £1M a piece, it's so far out of reach that it's really just a very early precurser to the technology trickling down slowly to more attainable vehicles.

Wonder if the engine has a pre-heater of some sort? I can imagine trundling around town on the electric motor, then getting to some open road, putting your foot down and asking the engine to pick up the gap with cold oil etc. Exit bits of block stage left.

I'm still shaking my head in disbelief, what an amazing piece of engineering!! The video clip was absolutely awesome, complimented by the commentary from the Porsche Engineers and Chris quiizzing them with the exact questions that I would have asked also......man that's legendary status, love it!!!

I don't want to admit it, but I think I get it now. Great to see engineers so into their product as well, but I didn't think I could be so excited about such a heavy car.

Interesting comparison with he 959;

Not loved quite so much as its contemporaries when released, but the only supercar to directly relate to genuine road cars for the next 25 years.

The future is now?
