Why does the UK Government feel the need to tax people even more? The road fund licence is already skewed to penalise 'thirsty' cars, which are already penalised becuase the bulk of fuel cost is tax, and the more fuel you buy the more you pay in tax. The only result is going to be Britain's luxury car industry losing sales - in turn making them volume uncompetitive and therefore shedding jobs.

Not sure I believe anything I read in the Torygraph that is attributed to the Liberals (after all, we all know they're only really in the coalition for the Tories to blame all their bad decisions on, come the next election - Shame Clegg didn't realise that...).
More worrying than a tax on new gas-guzzlers is the suggestion that they'll subsidise the purchase of Toyota Yaris.
Aside from the GT86, there should be a penalty for chosing a "White Good" as transport!

Tim Leunig is purely London centric, he has spent most of his life in the big smoke & is/was a lecuture at LSE, Lib Dem campaigner for better public transport at the expense of private transport is his main topic along with housing benefit and social mobility.
He is using this poorly written paper as a bit of free publicity and try to appeal to the hard core of their supports who feel disenfranchised at the moment.
The paper is merely going to a thinktank discussion, I doubt it will go much further.
If it does, then we have fight on our hands.

It reminds me of the pro-£25 a day London Congestion Charge people on the streets. One of them was asked why she was there and she came out with the usual b
ks about saving the planet and large engined cars were killing it.
She was asked if she drove and confirmed her car was a 2.2 litre something and was then told it would be hit with the £25 charge. Her relpy was "it can't be, it's not a gas guzzler". Once convinced, and still shocked she said "I thought it was only here for the gas guzzlers; how am I going to get to work everyday? I can't afford £25 a day!!"
Most of these morons are so pie in the sky; again, who cares!

Right - so under this policy a 1.25-litre Ford Fiesta's price will go up.
Which means that by their reasoning a 1.25-litre engine is in the same profligate spirit as a Jensen Interceptor.

All I can be thankful for is that no-one will vote for them at the next election, UKIP will take their place as the third party, this will force the Tories towards the Right to steal the vote back, Miliband (if he has any sense) will ensure Balls meets with an unfortunate gardening accident and Chuka Umuna replaces him as chancellor, and balance will be restored to the system within the course of another Parliamentary term (a term which, due to such narrow majorities, no-one will actually get any laws passed anyway).
