How can the stock 172 (not the cup) be so far above the 182?

And why aren't the cup and and standard one split into two categories if the 205 is? Not fussed by the results but some of the groups look a bit strange.
Because this is a poll by 300BHP/TON and he is a law unto himself.
+1 Brilliant post! P.S this list is worthless as it hasn't had max exposure

Please can we have a group consensus on THE TRUE DEFINITION OF A HOT HATCH?

As Petrol Heads I'm sure we can take some time to really define it.

Then, and only then, may we create such a vote for the ultimate Hot Hatch.

In a rare turn of events, I actually doff my cap at 300bhp for putting the list together- sure, there are a few obscure cars listed but the results were voted for by the readers of this very site.
Good on you 300- good thread. For those that would rather complain and moan about what should/shouldn't/is/isn't....

Perfectly easy to start your own thread.

As great as the Lancia is, I agree with some of the views here - it just doesn't naturally occur to me as being a Hot Hatch, despite the bodyshape.

I'd be happy with any of the Top 10 results anyway! smile

Lol at some of the responses from disappointed owners. I've had 4 of the top 20 personally, the list isn't exhaustive but it's a once trip down memory lane.

You, sir, have no right to call yourself a petrolhead.
I've driven many of them, a mate is an enthusiast who resells special editions and I know alot about how much of a nightmare they are to own. I wouldn't touch one with a bargepole for that reason and compared to the Golf they really are crap.

It's my opinion based on friends who run them, my driving experience and also other cars I've owned.

The poll should have been "favourite hot hatch" as each voter has not driven all of the cars and what was their criteria. Was it which car was the best to drive or best built because this makes a huge difference.

I think the 5 GT Turbo should have been higher up. Having owned one for 8 year and driven several of its competition it should be higher for it crazy power delivery alone and thats before we even start talking about its rear wheel elevation trick round sharp bends smile . Yes they have some niggling issues but which one of these cars hasn't.

As far as i can read a hot hatch is NORMALLY fwd and front engined however i cant see anywhere that excludes 4wd or mid engined. The fact that the likes of renault made radical mid engined hatches, as they were based on the 5 and clio, should not mean they are excluded. Instead we should thank them for daring to break the mould and giving us some very different and very charismatic cars. Likewise with the integrale and cosies. I may be biased owning a V6 and i agree it is not the best handling hatch or even the fastest but it looks awesome and is unique but i generally agree with the top 10 maybe in a slightly different order. One thing is for sure there are some very cool cars in that list and i wish i could have most of them.

Glad to see the MK2 Golf GTI was a strong contender. Was it supposed to be 8 or 16 valve?

I was well into my hot hatches in the late 80's and 90's and still own an immaculate 3 door 1990 MK2 16V Golf. The car is quite a famous little Golf having been featured in the Golf GTI Tuning bible Tim Stiles wrote.....it heralds from the era of GTI Engineering and BR Motorsport when they ran 2 litre blocks, flowed heads and wilder cams....mines one of those with just over 200bhp and 162lbs running a Quaiffe and proper suspension....it certainly gives an R26R a run for it's money as it only weighs just over the ton and laps Combe in a tidy 1.21!! Can't bring myself to ever part with it!!

I had 3 Pug's one early 1.6 with 115BHP and two 1.9's....wild child cars with a tendancy of light weight antics in the wet!!

MK2 RS Turbo Escort I owned was not in the same league.....pants ABS system!!

I owned an exact same car as the integrale pictured albeit with some subtle upgrades to give 300 bhp, I have driven all the cars here bar a clio v6, and car honestly say the Lancia gives the most thrill factor. It has amazing feel, poise, grip and an engine that just begs to be revved ( 8mpg when on a spirited run though in mine). And having an Evo model means better ?!?! build quality and in my 4 years ownership not one niggle or breakdown despite being used regularly and driven as it should be.

is is a hot hatch, well some yoof in a corsa next to me in a petrol station said one day " where did you get the body kit for that golf?".

Obviously no reply was given to the heathen.

Very list especially if those who voted have never owned or driven one of the cars.

Off to save for another Lancia.

Why is the 205 GTi split into 1.6 & 1.9?

If so, why isnt the Golf split into 8v & 16V variants?

I agree that whislt the Evo is an excellent car it should not be included as a hot hatch - one of the greatest drivers cars of all time even if you beleive what you read (as I havent been in one) but its a rally rep and not a hot hatch in the traditional sense.

Good fun and some interesting cars on the list!

Which one is then? Unless we're talking about the ridiculously expensive Mugen FN2? If so, hardly an attainable car for most.

The whole concept of a hatchback is that the hatch has a luggage compartment behind it so the Clio V6's hatch is no more than an engine cover, not strictly a luggage hatch. A Range Rover Sport is more a sports hatch than a Clio V6....IMO.

I appreciate all that but your Delta IS a hot hatch and an Integrale IS a rally car minus the stickers.

I've owned Integrales and never thought of them as "hot hatches" because they seem more "sophisicated"

I own an R26.R and barely think of it as a hot hatch because it feels like quite a big car to be a hot hatch, I also have a 182 Cup which most definitely IS a hot hatch but I think my favourite hot hatch is actually the 205 GTi, I would love another drive in a good one just to check that it is as good as it is in my memory, it's been a LONG time!
