The best qualified shed in weeks i guess
looks like a shed
colour of a shed
built like a shed
inside of a shed
shed of an engine.
but it needs to be worthy to qualify a mention in the 'shed column of PH, and this plainly isn't.

For that, I might prefer an oil burning FWD so my money would go on a Mondeo instead. I think it'd be less likely to break and be nearly as comfortable.
In my experience an oil burning Mondeo is far more likely to break - especially when at 100k+.
yes

This has the OM606 carried over from the W124- indestructible. Tranmission etc is strong.

Trouble, as we know, is that the bodywork doesn't tend to last as long!

W210's are underrated cars if you can keep on top of the rust.

And stop grouching about the interior, people - plenty of leather ones in all colours on Ebay from as little as 150 sovs.

That's a rather big "if".

I am wondering why anyone would want one of those. W124 being so much better/smarter.

All cars have a finite life. W210's of all types are hardly expensive. If you find an OK-one and get two years out of it before it dissolves more than you can stand then so what?

I actually quite like them, the facelifts in particular. They have some of the old residual "heavy solid car" driving style of old style Mercs (which later one do not) combined with far more modern features than the likes of the W124.

Also after 14 years the rust will either be very apparent, or repaired, or they are one of the cars largely unaffected. It's unlikely someone is going to do a superficial cosmetic re-spray on a car that's only worth £1k without rust.

Put like that... and with a good drivetrain... and I think you're beginning to convert me on this one. smile

You're forgetting the most important thing: The badge.

You can pick these up alot cheaper than £1k.

I have had several W210s over the last 2 or so years.

E200 Estate which was way under-powered and E230 Saloons and Estates. I picked them up cheap as stop gap cars, and they did the job.

The body work on some of them was atrocious, but they were mechanically sound. Most of them had rotten wings, and one estate acutally had holes in the boot floor so you could see the road!

However, they are a nice place in which to undertake long journeys, they are smooth, comfortable and quiet.

Not a patch on the W124, but still a lot of car for the money.

Having owned both, I can honestly say that the E39 530d I have was a FAR SUPERIOR car in every way.

Quicker, better to drive, more economical and the cabin was a more pleasant place to be.

The 210, if in decent nick, will have a bit more 'bling factor' about it. But, the 39 was more fun to pilot.

A friend of mine who is a Mercedes enthusiast has a mint E240, year 2000 on an 'X' registration, facelift model.

It is truly immaculate, and he waxes it every week without fail. Definitely the cleanest 210 I have ever seen.

However - I keep telling him to sell it and buy a 'proper' Merc!

Currently got a year 2000 W210 E320 CDI Avantgarde Estate tiptronic.

Fully loaded, with elec heated and air cooled leather, parktronic, power fold mirrors, self levelling suspension, etc.

However, since owning it, I have broken down twice, due to the water pump failing (only found out the 2nd time I broke down that the water pump was at fault), a diesel pipe on the injectors has split, so it's pissing diesel everywhere and it only manages around 26mpg (this is before the leak!).

When it was running right, it was a very nice car to drive and complete journeys in. Smooth ad effortless power, with all the gadgets you would need. But it's not been a good experience for me so far!

My 530d used to average between 35 and 40mpg, and on a long run, easily over 50mpg.

How is it bad that it's not an estate?
The saloons are more refined and look better. Since I would rarely need a larger boot, I'd rather have it.

Best of the bunch are the E55 AMG Estates - very rare now.

In estate form, the W210 is definitely one of the largest ones out there

There is something wrong with that mpg. An auto E320 CDI should be about 10% better than an auto 530d in like for like driving.

Frankly, I wouldn't touch this with a very long stick.
Engine and gearbox wouldn't be my main concerns.
The RUST would.

My wife had a R reg Corolla and everyone was telling us how Jap cars rust etc. Guess what, in 2011 when we sold it NOT A SINGLE SPOT OF RUST ANYWHERE.

This E-class?

I've seen plenty around R, S plates almost completely rotten through. You're driving behind one worries that like a leeper it will start loosing bits any time.

So thanks, but no thanks. I'd very much prefer the predecessor that this.

And now for something a little different...

Forget about that diesel crapper, you can't beat one of these at this price;

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C306715

It's the wrong fuel and wrong colour, but you get the feeling it's worth more in parts alone.

And then there's this little beauty, at just over twice the shed budget it's about ten times the quality of any SOTW I've ever seen. I can't remember the last time I saw a 190E this clean and sensibly priced. No battered and abused Cosworth rubbish here.
