RE: SOTW: Mercedes E300 Turbodiesel
Discussion
Had two brand new ones at the time, both petrol V6 autos, firstly a 240, then a 320.
Longer term apparent issues aside (then unknown) such as rust, both were fantastic and pretty well ideal 'business' cars; spacious, relaxing, very comfortable and utterly reliable: a great car to walk towards and get into for a 250 mile drive home in the dark and pouring rain after a day of arduous business meetings.

Rust from this era Mercs is well documented. They are terrible for it.
Yes, I'm well aware of it. Just trying to maintain a little balance. Not all W210s are rusty.Just the same as not all K-series engined MG/Rovers have failed head gaskets.
And not all Mk2 Mondeos have cracked rear bumpers.

My neighbour has one, I'm inclined to tell him that my "work" suit is now officially worth more than his car.
If I was your neighbour and you told me that, I'd laugh at you for spending more on a suit than I paid for a roadworthy Merc.J4CKO said:
A mate had the newer one with the Common Rail and it rusted, had electrical gremilns, it leaked from the injectors so it smelt like a Cross Channel Ferry, he had it fixed but the muppets that changed the injectors used the same stretch bolts so they snapped and it spat the injector rail out of the top of the engine cowl, sold for scrap at 134k which is a pretty short life for an alledged quality car.
To be fair ,that's probably down to the muppets rather than the quality of the car. And with reference to all of the comments about seeing some that aren't rusty, they were probably resprayed under warranty. Mercedes would rectify rust up until 10 years, I know of two E classes and a CLK that had new wings and full re-paint by Mercedes and the CLK was a cheap auction buy that was 8 years old at the time. Unfortunately my wife's CLK was too old and I had to pay to have rear arches rectified, not the end of the world at a couple of hundred quid though. It's normally just paint bubbled off, except the mud trap in 210 front wings, then it means cheap Lithuanian pattern wings off eBay.
Good old barge really, one thing though, these didn't suffer injector issues it was the newer direct injection CDI engines that did, the 300 TD was the last of the old bullet proof Merc diesels, I'm pretty sure the W210 didn't have the gearbox cooler issues either it was the newer shape that did, not 100% on that one though.

O/T but: most Hindus have no general objection to leather. They do shun beef, but leather is no problem for most of them. (Of course there are exceptions, but if you go to India, you will find that amongst Hindus, there is virtually zero beef consumption, but there are leather goods everywhere.)Buddhists do tend to shun leather - which is why many JDM cars have cloth interiors where you might expect leather.
My Dad had an E320 estate of the same year. It lived in our bone-dry garage and only came out for holidays in the South of France in the summer... and the damn thing still rusted!
Mechanically though it remained perfect. If you accept the bodywork issues, these are real value for money

" Terrible - awful rusty rubbish doing a big poo on mercedes "hewn from granite" reputation.

... but what is your posh suit now worth ??? ( not what is cost I bet )

They're not all rusty. It depends on usage/maintenance.
How can it? Those that haven't had their paint scratched away and haven't been driven through the sea are less likely to rust?AFAICR 97/98 is when they switched from being utter rust buckets to merely acceptable. That's not good news for this particular SOTW.

When I worked at Volvo there was the occasional religious family (generally Jain or Buddhist) that would not have a car with leather, failing to notice the leather steering wheel and gear knob that they would be in constant skin to skin contact with...Buddhists do tend to shun leather - which is why many JDM cars have cloth interiors where you might expect leather.
The truly devout would request the steering wheel to be changed to a poverty Euro government specification plastic item.

99% sure this car has just been bought by Barge Threadist PHer BlueMR2...I thought that Shed of the week was supposed to get something interesting for under a grand. This is possibly the most uninteresting shed yet.
I'm desperately trying to think of a redeeming feature for this shed. Its a diesel, auto, non leather in 'champagne gold'
Nope, still can't see it. Shed fail.
