my vote goes to this combination of engineering excellence and lunacy

A gorgeous muscle car with a 1650 hp marine (as in boat) V8 engine. jaw dropping

That is a phenomenal effort with a factory level of fit and finish.

And to think only this morning I was dreaming about an R32 4x4 conversion for my PD170 MK2 Leon FR and thinking it was too silly...........

Yep, because it would then be slower!

1970 Chevelle twin turbo diesel

1700 lb. ft. of torque and 35 mpg anyone?
1700 lb. ft. of torque!!!

I have a small planet that needs towing.
the rear wheels might spin 35 miles for every gallon of fuel, but i'd imagine the car goes slightly less far.
I'm not so sure... Have you seen the size of them?
Not quiet nearly as mad, but my old turbodiesel swapped W124 is quite fun with 450bhp/174mph

For those not old enough to remember, here is a car that graced the pages of car mags in the late 70's;
The Ford Granada Mako P..

Or locally there's a couple of these, made by DJM Motorsport at Boughton, Notts (not sure that this is one of those made by them, but it's indicative of what can be done...)

If we're going homemade, how about a homebrewed 4-rotor using 13B-MSP rotors in an FC RX-7?

You'll need to explain how 240bhp would be slower than 170 in the same car. And the R32 lump wouldn't be kept stock in any case..........

Nah, there was some swedish(?) chap who'd tuned something up to 1000bhp and whapped it in the front of Vauxhalls executive barge. They tried to vmax it on some ring or other, but unremembered mechanical failure may have put paid to it.

Will try to dig the issue out in the absence of someone with an infallible memory.

Here's the thing I was thinking of. In German, unfortunately. They say that the flex-plate on the gearbox couldn't take the autobahn speeds.
http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/210264/vauxhall_omega.html

This is the Evo article about that Omega.

The owner apparently later had an incident at the Nurburgring and deformed it somewhat.
That was most likely this (norwegian) car: http://rats.no/omega_tg.htmlhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N__PXqzuyB0
I'd say it's an extensively modified Omega platform and a heavily modified Lexus V8 including supercharger, cams, larger valves, Cosworth helped with low compression pistons+++

Shame the link is all in norwegian, it's a rather interesting build thread and to see to which depths they went to squeeze 1005 ps out of that engine. EVO magazine went on a ride along on Mercedes' test track I think for a top speed run.

Apparently I heard it was heavily damaged in a crash, though I hear rumors of it being rebuilt with carbon fibre everything.

Regards

I knew Graeme many years ago when I was an active member of the WSCC, he has always built cracking cars. I didn't realised he had moved to Barbados.
