And a good side of 4k with fitting .....

May look at recaro sportster cs's as a cheaper option and have then recovered, but in no rush as the current are well comfortable on longer drives and beats my recaro pole positions for such in my other car.....

BMW should make a 5-dr 1M for extra practicality, then it might be a little bit more interesting.
I give you the M135i hatchback. Available with equally marmite looks, 95% of the power, 5drs, adaptive suspension, a manual gearbox and yours for circa £30k. For the extra £10k a 1M costs, I dare say you could also tune it up to be as quick and lairy than a 1M too.
Agreed, sounds like much better VFM as well, especially as the "only car on the driveway".

I'd dare say fuel economy will be a tad better as well.

I also like the tii concept colour scheme
A real shame, IMO, that BMW never put the tii into production. I would have preferred the 3.0 from the 130i hatch in there, but then being a tii it was always going to have a turbo unit. A missed opportunity? I guess we'll never know.
^ agreed - they should have done a turbo four and a NA six I reckon. One of these days when I have the means I will be buying an M42/M44 car for a turbo build. My first BMW was a 16v 1.9 4-pot and although there's no doubt that as an all-rounder the 2.8 6-pot is easier to live with day-to-day, the feeling of lightness you get when back behind the wheel of a 4-cyl... it's a bit like going back to a grade 2 buzzcut after letting your hair grow out all winter.

Really like the bottom one, were they a factory option? Or special order?

So Chris Harris can't think of a reason not to buy it??? Obviously he hasn't done much research -

Don't buy one because it's highly likely some scrote will nick it in the first week of ownership....

Not sure these are affected by the OBD issue, but could get nicked anyway just as RS4's were a popular item in the early days.

All those saying the 1M is lighter and smaller and that the M3 feels big and bloated in comparison, you do realise that the difference is tiny right? The 1M is 70kgs lighter, the exact same width and only 10 inches shorter. It also uses the exact same running gear, in fact the only really major difference is the engine.

I've not taken a 1M for a drive but I'm keen to hear from those who have, where they think all this extra dynamism over the M3 comes from as the bare specs would indicate otherwise.

Don't be daft, we're not talking extra metres, it's not a choice between a SUV and a saloon. You know as well as I do, the M1 is just an almost, expected, natural marketing extension of the 1 series saloon. Who's it aimed at over the already superb M3 ? I just can't imagine laying down £40k for a slightly tiny'er version of a £28k, one year old M3. What advantage does it hold, other than if you have a small garage smile
Please, show me where they hide all the 1 year old M3s that are just £28k.

LMAO!
I'd say a 1 year old M3 for £28k would have been hit pretty hard...

I don't really like the look of the hatch but the coupe looks decent especially in M form. Seems like a very nice bit of kit, wouldn't mind a go at some point though it'll never be on my radar as a prospective purchase.

Sorry if this has been mentioned, but I got to page 3/4 and realised I hadnt done any work for a while.

But some things I would like to point out.
It looks nothing what so ever like a BMW Compact.
It's a coupe, not a saloon or a hatch.
The clue is in the name - 1M Coupe.

a 1M being nicked via the OBD caught on CCTV and on utoob (A PH member) helped finally to get BMW to sort the issue

If you don't know about the issue, you can just enjoy the car in blissful ignorance.

Winner either way!

very true

but likewise it would be a wasted opportunity not to take the piss out of BMWs shoddy software security wink

With respect, you need to drive both back to back to understand how different they feel. Looking at the data on a screen / piece of paper, etc doesn't do anything, you need to drive the thing to understand how good it is.

As I said before, (after having driven both back to back) the 1M feels more nimble and agile, it turns in more keenly and with the torque advantage it has over the M3, it feels very quick in real world situations. This is especially noticeable, for example, when in traffic on the motorway, the car in front moves over and you put your foot down to feel it spool up and fire off into the distance. In M-Mode, you don't feel the spool, it just goes without any noticeable lag (well mine does but it's remapped).

The M3, which I have huge respect for, has to be worked more in the same situation. I found in order to make similar progress, I'd have to flick a few gears down and floor it. That's all good, but it can make you look a bit of an idiot when you go revving past the car in front. In the 1M, you do it unnoticed....and faster!

Down the country lanes, the M3 felt bigger, less nimble and not as quick. Again, it's all subjective as it's a great car (I'm not knocking it). However on the same road, the 1M turns in more eagerly and powers out more quickly. Sure it's not a small car (again I'm coming from Caterhams, Elises, Exiges, etc) but once you get the feel for it, it inspires confidence to press on.

Of course, most of this post will probably be dismissed by people who have never driven the car and probably never will as there are so few of them. For those that have driven it and don't like it, that's fine because you've got something to base your views on. For everyone else, if you call yourself petrol-heads, get out there and try and drive one smile
