RE: You Know You Want To: BMW 1 M
Discussion
I think people are forgetting that CH chose the 1M simply for the facts that he thinks its an enjoyable car to drive, can be driven everyday without too much compromise, goes like stink, is relatively practical, is reasonably affordable to run and above all looks fabulous in HIS opinion.
He did not compare any statistics with regards to performance lap times, residual values or any other data that have been published. We can play trump cards all day long but this is a subjective decision he is making about how the car makes him feel.
He simply chooses the 1M because it fulfills the needs of a true petrol head and for him it ticks all of the necessary boxes.
I have a black 1M and bought this car for exactly the same reasons as mentioned!

He's also had the M3 already as well so presumably knows what he prefers He did not compare any statistics with regards to performance lap times, residual values or any other data that have been published. & he will no doubt update his preference at some stage soon.
I think he'll still prefer the 1M no matter how good the M3 is for the very reason that the 1M is torquey and immediately fun. Ask Jethro Bovingdon of EVO which he prefers, he'll say the M3 competition pack. It's all preference and the beauty of choice.

My turbocharged cars have always felt hugely quicker and easier to drive then my NA's, despite the fact that in reality some weren't. My 335i feels quicker than a friends M3 in isolation but side by side he'll disappear into the distance so just wondering if the easy nature of the 1M's engine is proving favorable to the quicker but harder to extract performance of the M3 in comparisons between the two. I've heard A LOT of comments that the M3 feels relatively flat unless you are properly on it, some people will love this, others not so much.
Well comparing my 1M (which is now has 430bhp and 485 lb.ft torque) to a standard M3 is slightly unfair. However I take your point that turbo cars do "feel" quicker than NA or Supercharged cars for that matter. I love NA cars and the best I've had for pure fun was an original Caterham Superlight. However since having the 1M (my first turbo car) I think I'd find anything else (non-turbo wise) slightly frustrating to drive in the "real world". Put it this way, my Caterham Superlight had a very similar 0-60 time to the 1M, but in the real world, pulling away from traffic, in-gear situations, the Caterham wouldn't see which way my 1M went.
I loved the performance of my Caterham, but to have that (and more) in a car that is so much more practical for me, personally, is fantastic. Obviously in an ideal world I'd have both

Had my E92 M3 years ago. Much to love about it, but it didn't get under my skin the way these 1Ms do. I can't afford one as a daily-driver at the mo. Looking for ways to change asap....
Time to sell your 599 Chris. And then join me in my M3 ZCP and 7 other 1Ms to IOM at the end of November mlhj83 said:

Yes, I saw that when he was back at autocar. It's the earliest version. Production cycle over the past few years, in-addition to new options unavailable back then, have improved the M3 noticeably as evident by Autocar, Evo's reviews and Car Magazine's long termer.
