Hi guys, i'm new to this so give me time to get up to date with the slang etc. im currently 17 and i drive a bright yellow fiat smile i'm looking for a second car to buy once my insurance runs out on the little cheese box. i have looked at the bmw 318is and the insurance seems do-able, i would like a car that hits 60 in 10s or less. Could anyone throw some ideas my way and i'll have a look smile

Cheers

What's your budget?
How many seats do you need?
What will you use the car for?
Mk3 Toyota MR2?

Will a 318i do 60 in under 10?

How about a 2.0 Alfa 156? 60 in about 8.

Make sure you get some quotes before buying, as I'm assuming they may be sky high. I can't get insured on a 318 for less than £1200, and that's with my mother as a second party on the insurance. Also I'm 20 and I've been driving for 3 years now.

If you're into cars and want something fun and/or interesting on a budget with sensible insurance premiums take a look at classics, modified classics and kit cars. You'll find little else to compete with it.

If you want more modern and mainstream then it might be worth looking at less obvious cars from a bigger class. When looking earlier this year/late last year. A 2.4 Audi A6 was no more expensive to insure for a new driver than an old diesel Fiesta was.

On this basis it wouldn't surprise me if a 5 Series BMW is cheaper to insure than a 3 Series.

Classic rwd British sports car (I have one of these, I bought one at 19 and I'm 32 now. sub 10 sec 60mph stock and quite tunable).
TRIUMPH TR7 (1980) £2,500
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

Save a little more and haggle a little harder and a V8 rwd British sports car is an option too.
tvr tasmin 350i 1987 (1987) £3,200
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

Another TVR not far off your budget
TVR 290 S (1990) £3,000
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

A bit of sporting Pork is a good option too.
PORSCHE 924 S 1988 (1988) £2,495
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

One of the most recognised sports cars in the world. And a real hoot to drive, although it would fail your 10 sec to 60mph target (you can mod them though wink )
MGB GT 1.8 (1978) £2,350
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

Another MG.
MG MIDGET 1500 1977 (1977) £1,275
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

If you fancy a bit of project and something different and fun. Cheap insurance and free road tax
VW Avante MK1 (1969) £1,800
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

Another wacky kit car, but kind of cool and with a V8
Eagle SS V8 (1971) £3,000

Call me old fashioned....but recommending a V8 to a 17 year old sounds like a recipe for disaster!

Got to let the jelly in the head set first, and pick up some road craft.

OP- are you good with spanners and have a lot of spare time on your hands? Do you have enough money to spend twice as much on fuel as you do now? You'll have to be to run most of 300BHP/ton's suggestions...

Don't even look at his crackpot suggestions, he does this in every thread.

"Hi everyone, I'm 17 and want a cheap car, cheap to insure, cheap to fuel, cheap to service."

"Ah, you need to think TVR, think Porsche, think wacky 70s V8 kit cars!"

Why? An RV8 is not overly powerful and many modern 4 cylinder cars can be just as powerful and as quick. Also what better way to learn about something but with experience? Even better if it's something with low grip and moves about easily.

Honestly, unless your an enthusiast willing to spend a significant amount of time and money maintaining one of 300BHP's suggestions, disregard them totally. These aren't like modern cars, they won't just work 24/7 with no attention apart from basic servicing.
By all means, feel free to go find a decent 318is- that is a spaceage machine compared to an old TVR or Triumph.

You really are a grumpy sod aren't you.

What exactly as in something real do you actually object too? Or are you just a stuffy old fart who only buys boring hatchbacks like a Fiat Panda?
