Over the weekend I came round to the reality that a 3 dr Clio 172 cup wasn't ideal for the life with a 3 month old baby. After 2 years with the Clio I reckon it's probably the most fun you can have for the money. Absolutely loved it.
So I put in on eBay on Sunday and took a deposit today for more than I expected to get.
So now I need a 4 door car. That can do 37mpg all day long and be fairly good fun. I'm a little stuck.

Is there a life after Clio cup?

Will I ever enjoy driving as much?

A Focus 1.8 petrol would fulfill your brief, there'll be one available for each level of your budget, they are not fast but are great to drive for a family car smile

If you're into cars and want something fun and/or interesting on a budget with sensible insurance premiums take a look at classics, modified classics and kit cars. You'll find little else to compete with it.

If you want more modern and mainstream then it might be worth looking at less obvious cars from a bigger class. When looking earlier this year/late last year. A 2.4 Audi A6 was no more expensive to insure for a new driver than an old diesel Fiesta was.

On this basis it wouldn't surprise me if a 5 Series BMW is cheaper to insure than a 3 Series.

Classic rwd British sports car (I have one of these, I bought one at 19 and I'm 32 now. sub 10 sec 60mph stock and quite tunable).
TRIUMPH TR7 (1980) £2,500
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

Save a little more and haggle a little harder and a V8 rwd British sports car is an option too.
tvr tasmin 350i 1987 (1987) £3,200
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

Another TVR not far off your budget
TVR 290 S (1990) £3,000
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

A bit of sporting Pork is a good option too.
PORSCHE 924 S 1988 (1988) £2,495
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

One of the most recognised sports cars in the world. And a real hoot to drive, although it would fail your 10 sec to 60mph target (you can mod them though wink )
MGB GT 1.8 (1978) £2,350
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

Another MG.
MG MIDGET 1500 1977 (1977) £1,275
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

If you fancy a bit of project and something different and fun. Cheap insurance and free road tax
VW Avante MK1 (1969) £1,800
http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

Another wacky kit car, but kind of cool and with a V8
Eagle SS V8 (1971) £3,000

Nissan Primera GT - 150BHP, great handling
Ford Mondeo ST200/220 - 200/220BHP, great handling
E36 BMW 328 saloon - 190BHP (220 with easy OEM mods) great handling

Edit, just saw the MPG criteria. All of the above can be had for less than two grand, spend the last grand and a bit on the extra fuel cost maybe?

papa hotel you didn't read the op he has a 3 month old so all the cars you have mentioned are pretty much uesless allthough i would love to own most of them ive already had a mgb gt.

If you want fun handling family car then the mg zs 1.8 or 2.5 v6 can be had for less than 1k and are big in side, big boot and have a great chassis. M father has had his 1.8 for 8 years know been a great car.

HA!!!
Nice bunch of 4 doors there papa!

All though, im staggered tvr's can be had for 3k!! Must remember that.

37mpg is what my Clio got. Doesn't have to be the same but I can't afford 20mpg.

Nice idea with the rover.

Sorry for hijacking your thread, I've copied and pasted a load of ridiculous suggestions someone else made in an earlier What Car? thread.

Will a 330i see that kind of economy? Or perhaps a 320i to be sensible?
