There's a mint rover 45 on an 03 plate iirc with change from 1600 quid at a local dealer to me - haven't seen one as clean for a long time but no idea which engine it has

Really depends on how much driving enjoyment you want from your new wheels?

My sister in law had an old y plate fiesta which just wasn't big enough when sprog arrived. Budget was v limited so looked at some left field stuff. Although its not the first word in driving enjoyment they ended up with a Seat Toledo (Leon with a boot) 1.8 20v for buttons - low mileage and 04 plate. Proved to be perfect for their needs. Fuel economy good too. A Leon Cupra will get close on fuel economy if you want some extra shove? Boot is pretty practical too

I don't do sensible fuel economy (a6 3 litre petrol and an s8 4.2!) so this is as sensible as my suggestions get lol

Mondeo st220 or a MG ZS 180 would be my choice for that money i think.
I don't know much about the MG but agree with you on the ST220. Downside could be the mpg, but cheap to buy considering the performance, handling and practicality.

I owned 2 106 rallyes before changing for a saloon. In the end i went for a saab 9-3 aero on a 54 plate. It cost £3k and round town averages 25mpg, 30 on a run. 210 bhp means its no slouch too. Can pick a decent one up for £2k but with higher mileage. Glad i bought one anyway. Hth.
