Hi All,

A question a friend of mine has asked me and I need help.

He has a budget of £3500 needs to shoot up and down the motorway to visit clients. 25-30k miles pa.

Requirements:

£3,500
42+ mpg on a run
Cheap to fix if it goes wrong
Executive badge-image (he is in the medical field)
Big enough to carry stuff - would prefer an estate

I realise that with this budget it is going to be older stuff with a few miles but it needs to look smart and not too old and rusty.

So over to you.

How about an Alfa 156/159 or Honda Accord - both available in estate form.

Or an S-Type Jag - no estate version though.

Given your criteria, I think the A6.

Looks better in estate format than the rest of the list.

BMW is good too, and would probably be what I would have got, but reading your list make me lean towards the A6 more.

Well, I'm in the medical field and drive an Octavia hatch. I've never found it a work issue when attending meetings. Read into that what you will about how much image matters. hehe

Coming back to left-field options: Old shape Volvo S60 or S80? (Granted, neither are estate but you'll get more for your money than plumping for a V70)

Honda Accord? VW Passat?

He doesn't know much about old diesels. Cheap to fix is not their forte.

An old diesel W124 estate might do him. No turbo to worry about in the 300d. Might find one in the price bracket.
