Blimey, I didn't realise the later Turbos were so long-geared.
Remember that Porsche always used to be very conservative with their published figures as well …
Those ones are from the Autocar test.

What does 2nd gear on your car go to?

E.T.A. Ah, I've just noticed you said an indicated 60mph in first.....as you were

Had a S2, loved it, used it every day for a 50 mile commute for 3 years, reasonable economy and never let me down once.

Echo all fond thoughts about this car. I had an S2 (actually the first car I owned) for about 4 years and I truly loved it. Yes I did get some bills that I couldn't really afford as a younger man, but the insurance and tax were cheap and in my mind that off-set it (amazing how you can legitimise something). Have recently had the opportunity to borrow a host of other cars for weekend drives and I actually don't think it can be beat for a combination of performance, practicality and comfort - even fuel consumption is pretty decent. Most other competitors lack in some way - which is why when I borrowed a 968 my overwhelming impression was that it was a 944 - with a 6th gear. Obviously Porsche couldn't improve on perfection!

Oh and those pop-up headlights...just made feel 9 years old again...a sensation that is priceless IMHO
I WANT ANOTHER ONE! But I promised myself that she would have to be a second car, and atm in London if you have a second car you are either nuts or loaded or both. smile

Pretty much identical to mine, I like those wheels but I kind of prefer them looking original, they arent set up for big wheels and need new front caster mounts to run them properly, not sure trying to "modernise" them nowadays really works, ok in the nineties but now they should be left nearer to standard, easy to end up trying to hard and looking a bit "Mutton dressed as Lamb".

Personally I want a 924 to do this to,

this, a Carrera GT kit and 200bhp would be alot of fun and a little different

I use my 944 2.5 daily. Has never let me down at all.

(Rise values, rise!)

Edit: Still looks pretty good after 23 years after a quick wash!

I use mine most days with no problems at all. Quite capable of holding its own in current traffic and with KW suspension it rides like it should.
With the price of Boxsters and 996s at the moment it would be hard to chose a 944 but I bet the good ones are around for far longer than these newer cars.
The wear their miles fairly well - 240K ish on mine and you wouldn't kow. It clearly isn't new but 140, 240, 300 K miles as long as you look after them you wouldn't really know.

I think the top speed was down on that test, 250 bhp cars were good for well over 160 mph.

Here's mine...

I set myself a little challenge a few years ago, to try a load of cars that i felt i should own at some point, but only by spending £1.5k pa in addition to the proceeds from whatever i was moving on from. Year1 mx5 1.8 which i really couldnt understand what the fuss was about, plus it rarely was used with 2 kids in tow. Sold at a profit and new funds added to the pot allowed me to buy the 89 2.7 944 above. I really wanted a s2, and only went to see this 2.7 as it was local and hoped i could squeeze the kids in before they grew too much. The condition was stunning, with 3 owners, 94k, fsh with the belts changed recently at Northway and to top it off the plate came too. (Slighty better than the CUM suffix it would have had!)
My plan dictated to sell it May this year, but i can't see where to go next. Mrs D loves it, the kids fit, insurance is less than the tax, parts are readily available for not a lot, and above all t's a superb drive.
My only fault is that there's a screw hole in the dash from an 80's car phone, after much thinking on how to repair it, i've settled on ........an ebay bought 1980's Panasonic car phone with large curly cable!
Lunch is for wimps!!

You post this story the morning after I sold my 1989 944 Turbo. It’s been the automotive love of my life—I doubt I will ever feel the same way about another car. Absolutely gutted to let it go.

I’m away to cry into my morning coffee now. Thanks.
So you finally sold it then?!

I'm still missing my old 994t...

I had a 250SE model year 1989 and a 220bhp early 1986 car.

Both were stunning machines. Really well build and solid. Plenty of power to get anyone into trouble with the old bill. Surprisingly easy to drive fast too, especially through the twisty bits.
I had a similar era 911 and this was hard to drive fast on a twisty B road.

I am on the hunt for a decent 944t, but the prices have rocketed for standard cars.

I will have another by my 40th birthday.

Have always regretted selling my 968 Sport, and will have a 944S2 or Turbo next if the saving for the 993 doesn't work out. My dream car as a kid was the 944

The first car is not a Turbo S, they were all MY 88 with the M758 Option and do not have a sunroof, there are only 48 left in the UK, check the DVLA website, early 86 MY Turbos had forged rods, crank etc and are bomb proof, Turbos can easily see 300BHP and spend a bit more 350 is easy, you can go further if you want to chuck money at them.
They make supberb track cars and can also be used everyday, they are getting on now and finding a good un is a must.
The 3.0 S2 model is a great evryday bus, loads of specialists and breakers about and beleive it or not main dealers are best price for some spares having said that other things can be stupidly priced, if you are not a spannerman a decent mechanic can easily look after it.
they are very undervalued in the UK but not elsewhere.................get one, a good one and they are brilliant.

I ran a 944 Turbo as a daily for 3 years up until May this year, doing 36,000 miles in that time...it had 231,000 miles on when I sold it!

i bought it as a joke station car when I turned 40, but it turned into the best car I have ever owned!

Bought for £2,600, sold for £1,800 and I spent a whisker over £5,000 in maintenance over that time, so if you add Maint and Depeciation together she cost me 16p a mile...compare that to a Euro grot box!!!

She only ever let me down once and would do about 28mpg on a run too!

Of course I had to replace her with something cheap and sensible...

They are both very practical cars, I would drop my daughter off for Hockey goalie Practice on a saturday morning and ride my mountain bike around Grafham Water:

and my 9 year-old can change the brakes:

Don't be afraid to use them properly either!!

My Road trip to Scotland in the turbo in February was amazing, the car never missed a beat.
