Could be true- but from experience of fixing 944's that failed the Mot on rusty sills it can be done quite cheaply. If buying one you should be able to check for rust with just 2'minutes poking around underneath ( unless you are blind or stupid). Don't buy a rotten one, a good bodyshop could replace both sills for £800 plus paint - but a so called specialist might charge you double that for the same job.
£800 is good ! though near 50% of the cheapest cars, well worth doing though as the rest seems tough.
Seen reports on the club forum of cars looking fine only to be jacked up and find that the jack goes up but the car does not.

Cool. Will you ask him if the caliper were suffering from plate lift, please? Im reluctant to fit my own pads in case they are, although theyre new calipers.

I owned the car for quite a while before realising that they were later type, with decals instead of the raised script...
The fronts had had new calipers just before I got the car so were fine, the rears suffered a little, but scraping out the oxidant, judicious use of coppergrease and a little light grinding of the pads sorted them

This would be a lottery win car for sure. A touch under $100k would secure it I think.

Recent(ish) auction results suggest interest is piquing in the cars, in the states, at least.

And a bit of real dreaming for you 968 Turbo RS (not a 944 sorry). The eagle eyed will spot one at the above auction that in the end realised $346,500. Prices for the 44's were not bad either wink.

Here is a maritime blue one. cool

I went from a 944 Turbo to a 968 and whilst it is a lovely car and much more 'complete' in terms of its chassis, I still miss the Boost and sheer drivability of the 944 Turbo
Seems to be an oft-repeated remark - despite the n/a offerings people who've had both 'miss, the turbo one for fun

Another often repeated "fact" is that the later cars rot more than the early cars …
This is actually sort of true. The Turbo and S2 have plastic trim below the sills, giving them a lower appearance. This plastic trim, especially the small pieces bolted to the bottom of the front wings, trap dirt, mud and water. After twenty plus years, these plastic trims are better known as ‘rust traps’.

Keep cleaning them out and things will be fine.

I think it goes further than this, that Porsche skimped on the quality of the steel as they progressed through the 944 production. It's rare to see a very early Lux (as they were all Lux's then) which is badly rusty, but the end of the line cars (H/J plated ones) are often very rusty. It's obvious in smaller time frames than that as well - F-reg S2's/turbos tend to be slightly better than J-plate ones.

The fact that the S2/Turbo trims held water and mud against the bodywork just added to the malaise.

Lovely and possible to copy for under £25k. I especially like the 18 inch wheels biggrin.

Then when money was really tight they stopped skimping on the quality of steel for the 968 ?.

These older 944 models can be fun. I've had several inc a Silver Rose turbo but my last was a 86 944 2.5 manual to which I fitted 7" + 8" x16" Fuchs with Toyos, Spax shocks, Sparco race seat and Momo Proto steering wheel, Bob Watson serviced. I had some very quick early morning drives in it, handled fantastically. Sold it to help finance a house move in 2010 for...............£2k. Regretted it ever since.

That is just stunning and I'm going to use the fact that mine's the same colour to post pic despite it not exactly being a 944...

Out of interested, whereabouts was that pic taken? I'm guessing it's a hill climb venue?

I don't know actually. Good Q. I know that rust has started to become an issue on 968's of late (commensurate with their age now) but don't know the details. I don't know how much rustproofing was applied to the 968's compared with the 944. I also understand that the 968 was made in a different factory to the 944's (which were assembled in the Audi plant in Neckarsulm) which will bring some other factors into play as well.

AFAIK the 968's were assembled at Stuttgart along with the last few S2's and cabs. My opinion is the rust issue is down to how the car has been treated in the last 10 years, I looked at a couple of early turbo's that were real shockers.

They only made 4 968 turbo RS though, and only one in blue. The 968 TurboS was circa75k new and I think they made about 15. I have only seen one, on my first trackday at croft back in the early 2000's

Were you there when the copper in the layby looked into the back of my car - saw the slicks and said I'm going to do you for bald tyres smile ?

No, and I had forgotten it till now! Was a great day, but it started an expensive journey, New suspension, sticky tyres, bigger brakes, 50% more power etc. smile

I think all the front engined cars are fantastic and fantastic bargains. I went straight from 924 to 968 but I was actually looking for a '44 S2 when the 968 hove into view. For sheer drivability I don't think ther's much to beat them providing the suspension is in good shape. They flatter the driver something chronic.

The 928 is an itch that's going to have to be scratched one day mind you.
Thanks a million. Not used near enough, In fact, 4 times this year!!! Weather been ste, and not enough days to drive it!

I have been considering a 944 Turbo for the past few months. Not sure why really, but it is good to see some of the stories here.

I was not really looking for a Cab, but this one from Malton looks amazing. I bet it has a price tag to match!

How much do you think a good turbo will cost ?.
