RE: Ecoboost Formula Ford coming?
Discussion
Hi after a very wet trackday Monday 8th oct at Brandshatch I was very interested to see one of these little beauties discretley popped into one of the pitlane garages, then being noise tested (very civilised) sounded sweet.
PS some very nice ford mustangs with Fmc number plates in attendance.

After a very wet trackday on Monday 8th at Brandshatch,I watched one of these little beauties being ushered into a pitlane garage and being noise tested!,very tame but still sounded great. Great livery,in attendance were a couple of shelby mustangs bearing FMC *** on the plates. Real shame had to leave before it got on the circuit.

...and the fuel tank will already be at higher standards than a road car.
I don't think the quality of the tank will have any bearing, it's the location just in case there's a leak (or rupture, in the event of an accident).I don't know the requirements for race fuel cells, but part of me thinks the type approval for road cars would be more demanding.
Getting back to the point, this is an amusing bit of marketing for the new Formula Fords. The new cars have been an abject failure so far, with hardly any sold and some impressive engine issues affecting the cars in race conditions. So at least Mygale might make a few quid back if they can punt a few out as track day cars.
Most drivers, trying to get one of those away from the lights, in the wet, would either spin or stall the thing.
For those who can drive they would be close to the ultimate.
A few years back there was a bloke on here who had converted a Lotus 20 Formula junior to road registered. He is a hero, but I wonder if he is still alive.

Most of my commute to work is through tunnels underneath Neuchatel...that would be cool.
Weekend and head up into the Alps.
THink Ive found my perfect car That would sound awesome through the tunnels and ditch everything up the Alps!
It wouldn't sound very awesome.Weekend and head up into the Alps.

I'd definitely be interested ... but with the level of enthusiastic responses on here; suggestion to Mr Ford, why not make 2000, not 50 and price it at sub £30k (economy of scale would allow)??
For the reasons given above:1) They apparently wouldn't be allowed to produce 2000 of them with type approval, which this could never obtain.
2) 2000 wouldn't be enough to invest in a proper production line, so would make very little difference o the production costs.
Wow - kudos for Ford for even thinking about this! What with the news that they're thinking of making this, and that they'll properly be selling the new Mustang in the UK too, I have to applaud what they're doing these days. Now if only I could afford both a Mustang and one of these - ho hum :|

You've obviously not heard one of the 3 cylinder Ecoboosts then. They make a cool noise!!
Anyone (like me) old enough to remember the GpA Daihatsu Charade GTti rally cars won't argue with you.The ecoboost, tuned and with less extreme exhaust system would still sound bloody brilliant on the public roads.

What's the gearbox in these things? Is it an H-pattern manual, or a sequential, or an automated box?
Manual sequential, mechanical shift only. Formula Ford Regs 2012 (PDF)xRIEx said:

You think another 50 of them would bring the manufacturing costs down significantly?
Ignore the 50 they have said.IF they made significantly more, the cost would significantly reduce.

More efficient tooling would be designed that would reduce the time to manufacture them.
I don't think they'd ever reach the kind of volumes to ever make it worth significantly mechanising the build process, so I don't think it'd make all that much difference - it's certainly not going to reduce the cost of manufacture by 40%!red_slr said:
£50k... look at some other high end "simple" track day cars Caterham SP300R or BAC Mono... I think £50k would be cheap, very cheap.
If these are priced even close to the Mono, surely they won't sell any?Would people even go for this if it was priced the same as an Atom?
(Wonder if Ariel have thought about a single seater Atom??)
